      There are some good herbal combos that work for that. I have one that has dandelion and milk thistle both in it. And it works for me well.
      Go to your local health food store and examine the herbs section. There are regualr brands of herbs which make many combos of formulas for specific needs. Just look for one that says liver cleanse, and examine ingredients. You then have to learn to dose yourself. There is a suggested dosage, but sometimes, you have to adapt to take less or more as is needed.

      When I first started taking the Liver cleanse herbs, I would feel really miserable. Just an incredibly terrible feeling. It actually took me a few times before I realized I was feeling terrible when I took the liver cleanse, beacause it was working!! then after few years of occasional use, I actually could feel great when taking it. Unfortunately, I'm back to feeling terrible when taking it.
      But expect some physical response while taking it. Try to take it when you're not going to be doing lots emotionally or physically. I also try to cut back on eating lots, just gentle foods, so you don't stress out the body. After all, the liver is what helps keep the body cleaned, so you're cleaning the cleaner. You don't want to freak out the body too much.

      I don't do it for long time. I might take couple pills in morning, maybe at night but usually not for more than a day's effort. it's not like it's a colon cleanse where you've got several yards of cleansing to do.
      Try it every couple weeks if you feel you're in need of good liver cleansing. But I wouldn't do it more than that, in fact probably just once monthly if you wanted a regular schedule.

      Check with the salespeople in your local health food store, they can easily steer you towards good products for your effort.

      No, there are no good products that is going to do anything to help your liver by "cleansing" it. People will believe anything anyone tells them and this stuff is just a bunch of nonsense. Milk Thistle research has shown it does have a good effect on the liver, but the cleansing stuff is wasting your money.

      Eat clay! Buy some edible clay online and chew a wade of it, then swallow it and drink a glass of water to flush it down.

    Has anyone felt 'stitches' on the right side after taking milk thistle and not drinking alcohol?
    I stopped drinking a month ago and started taking milk thistle.
    Nothing felt different until yesterday when I woke up with my usually big distended belly not as big, and slight muscular pains on the right side where the liver is.
    All I can think of is my liver is shrinking and the muscles are unstretching.

      My best advice would be to talk with a naturopath about how to clean your liver. The alcohol has, of course, caused a lot of damage to your liver. A naturopath can tell you just what to take to clean it and help it to heal. The liver is a very strong organ, and it can regenerate, but yours most likely needs some extensive repair.

      I spent many years eating less than healthy foods, taking lots of ibruprophen and sinus medication, and I did drink some in my wild single years. As a result my liver ended up enlarged, painful, and inflamed.

      I first did a colon cleanse and a parasite cleanse, which cleared the way for my liver to begin healing. I then did a liver flush about 5 times, removing thousands of gallstones (cholesterol). At times I felt pain in the area of my liver as some of the larger stones were expelled.

      Around that time, I visited a naturopath, who prescribed some drops for me to take. They were clear and tasteless, like water. I took them for about two months and my liver repaired and began to function normally.

      Now I have no issues with my liver, my colon or my kidneys. I wouldn't suggest you do the liver flush without first getting the advice of a naturopath, because it is possible that a large stone could become lodged in a bile duct and cause you to have to be hospitalized. It has been known to happen in rare instances.

    How can I improve my liver function?
    I think I may have a sluggish/poorly functioning liver, because I have acne, I am fatigued a lot, I have digestion problems, I don't tolerate fatty foods well, I am very sensitive to caffeine, I get headaches for unexplainable reasons, excessive body odor even though I shower every morning and wear deodorant, which all of those I have read are symptoms of a sluggish liver.

      It sounds like you definitely have a very sluggish, slow liver. Our livers are the work horses of our bodies. I had breast cancer a couple of years ago, and when you take chemotherapy, it damages the liver to a certain extent.       The answer is YES! But, only if it's a GOOD ONE. They are not all created equal. You def. want to eliminate the built up toxins and spoiled food and things that have gotten stuck in your colon over the years. The ony way for that to happen is to go #2. That's exactly what you want out of a good colon cleanser.

      I've been cleansing my colon for over 15 years and happen to have used ALOT of different products.

      There are only a handful of good ones. The one I used to use for many years is "Sonnes" #7 and #9 but with all the contraversy around the "bentonite" I'm not sure I would recommend it.       I suggest you consult a doctor for this. What I have read about milk thistle or silymarin is that it is taken as a supplement for the liver to prevent toxins from entering the liver cells. Milk thistle helps improve liver function and it is a strong antioxidant. But since it is non-toxic and has no overdose, I guess it will not hurt you to take it. But get medical advice.

    Should I take vitamins while on a body/colon cleanse?
    I have just started a body/colon cleanse routine which simply calls for my taking 2 -3 pills in the am & pm, but I normally take a multi, super B, calcium, milk thistle (clean liver) as well as Omega 3. I noticed with the cleanse, that having 2 bowel movements pushes everything out faster. Can someone who has done this give me a reply? This is not aimed at losing weight, but ridding the body of toxins since I do take allergy meds.

      Take psyllium husk and coconut oil before every meal. This is a very gentle but effective colon cleanse. The psyllium husk is pure fibre and will 'scrub' the inside walls of your digestive tract.     How to get rid of spots using natural ingredients?

      To prevent spots from developing on the skin, it is imperative that you avoid too much exposure to the sun. Protect the skin by wearing a scarf or a hat or carrying an umbrella to shield the face and body. Apply an adequate amount of sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 25. Remember to wait for about half an hour after applying the sunscreen, as it needs this much time to take effect. A very effective way to minimize dark spots is to massage the skin with vitamin E oil before sleeping at night. Lemon juice is an excellent natural bleach and fresh lime juice applied to the affected areas of the skin will help greatly in lightening the spots. Apply this to the skin overnight and rinse off in the morning. Gel of aloe vera is also beneficial in treating dark spots. Apply it before going to bed and wash it off in the morning, as it needs to remain on the skin for at least eight hours daily.

      You may also add a teaspoon of onion juice to a couple of teaspoons of vinegar and apply it to the spots by rubbing it in gently. Apple cider vinegar and orange juice may also be used for reducing dark spots. The insides of the watermelon skin are a very effective natural remedy for treating skin blemishes. Gently rub it over the skin and then rinse it off with cool water. Pieces of horseradish soaked in milk also work well to lighten black spots on the skin. Castor oil has been known to be effective in treating age spots. You may dab a bit of oil on the spots and rub gently twice a day. This should bring positive results in a month’s time. Honey is very effective in improving the skin and may be added to yogurt or cream and applied on the face daily. There is lactic acid present in the yogurt which helps to lighten the spots, while the honey provides a moisturizing effect.

      Without knowing what kind of spots you are talking about, it is very difficult to give a good answer on this one. I am going to assume liver spots or age spots as these are the most common. As their name indicates, they are caused by a poorly functioning liver…something that is common in the elderly. The best way to get these to go away is by taking milk thistle and dandelion to help the liver function increase. Drinking plenty of pure water will help flush additional toxins out of your system.

      To temporarily minimize the appearance of liver spots, you can make up a paste of lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, and sugar. Apply this paste to the spots and let it soak for 30 minutes before washing off with warm water. Do this twice daily and follow up with a good moisturizer like cocoa butter or shea butter. Avoid exposing your hands to the sun for long periods of time as this can make the spots appear darker as they tan just like the rest of your skin. Wear gloves when gardening or if you are going to be outside for a long time. If the spots are on your face, wear a sun hat when outside to protect your face

      Baking soda will not keep your body free of toxins. It may help somewhat with your alkaline/acid balance (pH) and it can kill off some pathogens it comes into contact with, but that pretty much ends at the digestive tract, since baking soda itself is not absorbed intact into the blood stream (though an urban myth would have us believe that it is if we mix it with maple syrup - hogwash!).

      To keep your body as free of toxins as possible, drink plenty of water and make sure that you pay attention to keeping your liver healthy and your bile ducts open and flowing. The liver is the body's primary toxin removal organ.

      Items that are good for the liver and bile ducts include milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid, selenium, turmeric, beetroot juice and coconut oil.

      Three items that help remove heavy metals from the body are cilantro, chlorella and parsley.

      Pure cranberry juice and watermelon help keep the kidneys flushed out and healthy. The kidneys are the second most important organ for removal of toxins.

      A third area of the body where toxins are removed is the skin. Thus it would be a good idea to keep your skin clean and scrubbed.

      It's a toxic world these days, and taking extra measures to help your body clear out toxins is certainly a good idea.

      EDIT: If you were previously told that fluoride does not accumulate in the body, you were fed some mainstream misinformation. That happens here often.     How do I get fat out of my liver?
    My GI informed me that I have fat in my liver! I was surprised, even though I have been overweight all of my life. The doc caught me off guard, and of course I want to improve my health. On the plus side,
    I lost 5# last week, and 2-1/2# this week. And, according to his scale, I lost 8 pounds in one month.

      You need to try to cut out as much fat from your diet as possible. Fat get stored in the liver waiting to be processed for when there isn't much other food being eaten. Which means that you will need to start fasting every so often to stimulate your liver to metabolize that fat. You should also detox. Milk thistle is the best detox for fatty liver.

      So, I would recommend a fat free diet, preferably free from ALL processed carbs as well, which includes ALL grains. Get you carbs from boiled green vegetables. Boiling makes them easier for your liver to process.

      If you eat eggs, you should get your protein from boiled egg whites, instead of meat, as it contains less cholesterol for your liver to digest.

      Start water fasting, and go for as long as possible eating nothing, but drinking lots of water. This will stimulate your liver to burn the fat it has stored within it for just this purpose. When you feel like you have to eat something, break you fasts with green vegetables (canned collards are good) and egg whites.

      You should take milk thistle caps every day. You will need to figure out how much to take. Everyone is different. First morning, take one capsule. If it causes you to move your bowels soon after taking, without too much cramping, good, it's working. That's the right amount.

      If your bowels don't move within 20 minutes, then that's too small a dose. Next day take 2 caps. If nothing, increase the dosage the next day until you move your bowels or they cramp up. If your bowels cramp up, then take one less cap the next day and stick to that dosage every day.

      Milk thistle flushes toxins out of the liver. Most of the toxins will go into your stool, however some will be excreted in urine and sweat. So you may break out for the first few days and have strongly smelling urine. That is the toxins leaving your body, which makes it that much easier for your liver to process the fat.

    What is the difference between a "medical" colon cleanse and one that you can buy over the counter?
    Is there a difference other than the time frame involved? This is what I mean, when someone needs to get their colon checked for cancer or polyps or whatever at the doctor's office, they have to drink this nasty liquid stuff the day before that totally cleans your system out.

      I'm not too familiar with medical cleanses, but I have taken an over the counter one and I work for a Vitamin company. Basically its all herbs that are for colon detox (ex. cascarda sagrada, slippery elm, etc) These and other herbs will slowly take the "toxic material" that is in your colon, and the fiber part of the cleanse will flush it out. The one I took was a 2-week whole body cleanse by Enzymatic therapy, and it consisted of liver cleansing herbs (milk thistle) Laxative formula and fiber pills. Basically in week one I took 4 fiber capsules in the morning, 3 laxative pills at night w/ 1 milk thistle tablet and 4 more fiber capsules. The second week it was the same amount of fiber but less laxative and more milk thistle. So, a colon cleanse product will be very close to this.       I have softened Gall and Liver stones with Vegetable juices. The after a week on the juice the stones where half the size they were, than I did a liver flush that eximinated them.

      The juice combination was 2 parts Carrot, 1 part cabbage, 1 part Broccoli, drink 1 quart daily for a week (three weeks for complete elimination).

      I also did salad twice a day (1/2 - 1 cup each or more) with these three vegetables grated/chopped and a salad dressing of 1 part Honey, 1 part raw apple cider vinegar (from health food store), 2 parts olive oil, seasoning to taste.       There are other ways I have heard of for gallbladder stones, but I feel that if the gallbladder holds about 10-20 stones, and the liver can hold hundreds, I would like to remove as much as possilbe.     My greyhound has had it for about a year and a half (he's eleven). His only real symptom is drinking huge amounts of water and of course urinating a huge amount. He can only make it for about 4 hours (at most) before having to go out and since this has gotten rather inconvenient, I was wondering if I can limit his water intake or would that be dangerous for his condition?       First of all, Science Chick, shut up. The vast majority of your run-of-the-mill vets dont know diddle about Kidney disease and it's just possible that someone here may actually have some knowledge on it, even if you dont.
      Glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the blood vessels in the kidneys and is often seen in partnership with kidney failure. You may notice some blood in the urine, or a routine UA may come back showing there is blood that you can not see. I can not possibly go through the whole list of causes here because there are many. I suggest you Google it and start doing some serious research. You may limit his water intake ONLY if you wish to kill him, as that's what will happen. His increase in water and peeing is his body's attempt to rid itself of toxins (flouride and minerals in the water, artificial dyes and preservatives in his food.....) because his kidneys have almost no ability to do it any longer. Just because he's drinking a lot does NOT mean he is well hydrated. In fact, what it means is that he needs to spend about 3 or 4 days at the vet clinic on IV fluids to help flush his kidneys. Glomerulonephritis can be either the RESULT of kidney failure or it will soon lead to kidney failure. Once the kidneys are damaged, that is permenant and ultimately fatal. If you have not already had your dog to a vet, you need to get him to one that is comfortable treating a kidney dog. This is usually an internal specialist but, once in a while you can find a vet that keeps up with his training and is knowledgeable in current treatment modalities. The first thing he needs to do is get your dog on IV fluids. Then you'll have to modify his diet, and learn how to give fluid injections under the skin at home. He should be on a Phosphate Binder (like Alternagel or Amphogel ONLY) to lower his blood phosphorus level. Your vet should have him on Epakitin (an Rx medication used to lower the Creatinine level) and Azodyl (which is just a probiotic and helps the gut maintain it's ability to digest foods and absorb nutrients). He should be on Milk Thistle to help his liver (which is a secondary filter to the kidneys and is no doubt in distress). He should be on Vitamins E and Fish Oil, and CoQ10. NO vitamin A or D. They cant be illiminated properly and quickly build up to toxic levels. If your dog has had this condition for a year and 1/2 now, it's definately time to take him to a vet and have his blood work done to see where the disease is in it's progression. I'm assuming that no treatment was begun 1 and 1/2 years ago....? That's a real shame because the progression could have been seriously slowed. If he HAS been treated, then kudos to you and your vet for being on the ball!!! So, the SHORT version of the answer to your question is: NO NO NO....do NOT restrict his water or he will quickly die. Please Google and do some researching.

      Antabuse (Disulfiram)

      A doctor can prescribe this drug if the person wants to abstain from alcohol. If you take antabuse and then drink any alcohol it makes you feel very ill. Symptoms may include: nausea, vomiting, tachycardia (increased heart rate), palpitations, breathing difficulties and facial flushing.
      Antabuse should be taken after a detoxification. Some GPs are not prepared to prescribe it because of the severe effects if alcohol is drunk. Implants of antabuse in the stomach are also possible, but this approach rarely used. There is no evidence that antabuse helps people significantly cut down on alcohol over the long-term.

      Campral (Acamprosate)

      This drug is prescribed to help reduce the cravings for alcohol. It is recommended that it should be taken after detoxification, for up to a year. If a relapse occurs the dose should be continued, as it appears to reduce the pleasurable affects of drinking. Research studies have shown that relapses are shorter and less alcohol is consumed if Campral is being taken.

    I tried to O.D on Hydrocodone apap 5-500 and took 15 of them at once over the weekend. ( I know now dumb thing to do and will never do again ).       Yea bad news, you need to hit up the doctor. If I assume by weekend you mean Saturday/Sunday that means each day you took 3750mg assuming you split it equally. First off, that's not OD'ing. You need well over 5000mg to do that. How do I know, Im a pain mgmt therapist. I don't know what you tolerance is but heres what happened. As you probably know, painmeds cause constipation. Well when you take a ton like you did, assuming your tolerance is low, you slowed you digestive track so low that your stomach could not pass new food you ate into your intestines because they were "clogged up" due to the high amount of opiates, so the only other thing your body could do is...yes throw it up. You can try 2 proven remedies before the doctor but if you get any yellow eyes or skin, or your sides by your obliques hurt you need to get to the doctor immediately, you could of just onset liver disease. Try getting milk thistle or dandelion extract at your local pharmacy, just ask the pharmacist where it is. It will be mixed in with vitamins. Do as the directions say, don't try to take extra because that will have negative effects. Also slow the hydrocodone dosage down to the normal amount. If you OD its not going to be on the codeine in the hydrocodone, its going to be on the tylenol. I recommend going to get the things listed above tonight. I really do. And you need to drink excessive amounts of water to flush your system. I also recommend getting a laxative or you will, and I mean will, shit bricks and it hurts like nothing you ever have felt, like some black dudes shoving his dick in your asshole. or childbirth. That about sums it up. Good luck, many people have done this. Also your normal dosage of hydrocodone will not work for pain now because you raised your tolerance.

      One more thing, if you took all those pills in 1 day then you do need to get medical attention now, you could die withing a few days, worst part, the symptoms show up then fade for a few days, then you die randomly. Liver failure due to tylenol overdose. I also recommend you pick up March 2011 MensHealth Magazine and read the articles on page 128. Its about many people who overdosed or didn't even abuse their pain meds and died. Consider this a second chance and your lucky. But your not out of the woods yet.

      Mint and Ginger Ale for stomach soreness. Take tums before you try to eat. If you puked up bile "its a yellow liquid" and would be the last thing you threw up, as much as it will suck, you gotta go to the doctor or hospital immediately, bile is from the gallbladder which works in unity with the liver, if bile comes up then you f*ed up big time.

      I shouldn't think so, but it is usually best to take supplements with food and to stagger the dosage. Take both the vitamins with breakfast, and split up the milk thistle and omega oil capsules so you are taking them with meals throughout the day. Taking a lot of different tablets can sometimes put a strain on the liver, but obviously thats not likely with milk thistle. The real problem with taking too many things at once is that it can affect how efficiently your system absorbs and utilizes the nutrients. Taking smaller doses over a longer period of time reduces the chances of your body simply flushing out what it can't make use of.

    Instead of a full detox, can I have just one meal a day?

But I'm afraid it would be too unhealthy to not eat for 5 days, so can I have the lemon drink whenever i'm hungry, BUT eat lunch as per normal (its healthy and balanced meal). Would this be a little healthier than just drinking the lemon drink for 5 days straight with no food?

      The detox things are just a fad. Detoxes should only be done if you're very, very, very sick and under the care of someone who knows what s/he is doing. This "detox" crap to "flush toxins" and "give more energy" is just that: crap. It's a bunch of hype people use to sell books and products. When I was born, I was given a liver and a set of kidneys...this is how my body detoxes itself. I'm sure you were born with the same equipment. If you have liver/kidney issues, there are things you can take to improve their function (for example, milk thistle improves liver function), but these are only to allow your detoxifying organs to work better...and the lemon juice or acai or cayenne pepper or maple syrup detox crap doesn't come with any of these beneficial herbs.

      In other words, your energy levels and mood levels are probably due to you having an imbalanced diet and not exercising properly (or often enough). That's it.

    Elevated Liver enzymes; anyone with advice or personal experience to share?
    I recently had lab tests done due to a persistent pain in the upper right side of my abdomen. The test results showed elevated liver enzymes. I have since had an ultrasound which showed no liver problems only an enlarged spleen; and I had a hepatitis panel drawn which was negative.
    I am taking pain meds to control the persistent pain, but I do not want to take these forever. At the present time, my physician has not determined the cause of the elevated liver enzymes or the persistent pain. (I do not have my gallbladder; it was removed approx. 2 years ago). I would appreciate anyone with a similar experience sharing his or her insights.
