Frequently Asked Questions

What are some good cleanses for food cravings?
I found out that i eat when im not hungry, and it's bc of cravings. If it wasnt for them i'd be able to lose weight more efficiently. Though i dont eat every time i have a craving, it would be easier for me to control my weight if cravings were a thing of the past. Has anyone tried a good cleanse for food cravings?

    • ANSWER:
I totally agree with mtreid2001 - the master cleanse is a terrific way to detox and break a food craving cycle. I've done it for 7 days myself with no negative effect.

Food cravings can be caused by a lot of things though, for example an overabundance of yeast (candida) or emotional issues, just to name a couple. As you travel your path to wellness using mindfulness might help you determine if your craving is linked to unconscious or unresolved emotional issues. (when i feel angry i am attracted to chips - darn it).

If, after reasonable attempts, you have no relief from cravings a visit to a health care professional would be in order.

Are there really artery cleansing foods or are these advertisement scams just to buy someone's product?
How does something remove the plaque buildup on the walls of an artery anyway? I am more interested in the foods than I am pills or potions.

    • ANSWER:
Healthy diets avoid plaque buildup, but there is no diet that can cleanse arteries.

how to cleanse your liver without pills?
I want to try a nice liver cleanse, but I'd really like to avoid taking any pills... is there something else I can do? A one-week diet where I eat--this will sound stupid--liver-cleansing foods? :D I'm willing to do anything that doesn't include taking more pills or anything artificial.
    Thank you!

      Heather -
We "cleanse" 24 hours a day through respiration, sweat, liver, and kidneys.
We can help by eating a healthy diet with minimal added sugar and salt. Lots of fresh fruit, raw nuts, vegetables, lean meats, whole grain foods, beans, peas, and brown rice keep a system as healthy as it can be.
Lots of water ,green tea (antioxidant), and diluted fruit juices.
Minimal alcohol, caffeine, soda. Read food labels. If you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body. Some cleanses actually flush out the beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the digestive system.
Spend your money in the produce department and your body will cleanse itself..
      Good luck.

The New York Times published an article yesterday stating the weight loss INDUSTRY is now estimated at billion per year. That's up billion per year from just two years ago.
And yet we still only have a 5% success rate for weight loss lasting more than two years.
Why are the con artists selling acai pills, colon cleanses, packaged foods, shake weights, and ab crunch gizmos really sucking the consumer public dry? When will we wake up and realize there is no shortcut to a healthy weight and lifestyle?

    • ANSWER:

What foods and drinks are good for acne and complexion?
I'm looking for foods that are good for naturally treating acne and that are good for the complexion. (I've heard that vitamin C and D are good for the complexion, not sure if this is true or not).
I've also heard that eating eggs is good for the complexion. If this is true, is there any specific way to prepare the eggs for optimum health and dermatological benefits?
I only said foods in the actual question box, but as the title says, I'm also looking for drinks. Preferably tea.

    • ANSWER:
For a healthy complexion, make sure that you eat leafy greens, a variety of colorful vegetables, anything with a high water content and vitamins (fruit, salads). Drink lots of green tea as it cleanses the skin, and make sure that you get plenty of water. Eggs are good for the skin hair and nails due to the high protein content. Fish and nuts are also filled with Omega 3 Fatty Acids which are beneficial to the skin and general appearance.

Best foods to build your immune system and get rid of toxins?
What are the best foods, juices or drinks to help build your immune system and flush out toxins?

    • ANSWER:
Any time you're planning to cleanse your body, you need to prepare a few days in advance by drinking fresh pressed juices, soups, and things that are mostly liquid and only made of vegetables. Then you can incorporate lemon juice, cayenne pepper, ginger, etc. Make teas out of these and drink them daily.
You can also do a cleanse on just fresh juiced vegetables. You can look online for a recipe, but I recommend a book on it. Also, lots of water, as it transports nutrients to the cells and flushes toxins out of your organs. Add some exercise, (but not too much WHILE you're doing a cleanse because you'll have less energy) and you'll be good to go.

Can doing a detox or cleanse reverse food allergies?
I'm starting a long term (3 month) detox which is designed to wean you off unhealthy food and get you to start eating healthy alternatives. I was wondering if eating healthy for a long period of time will reverse food allergies that were gained in adolescence.
Perhaps I should call them food intolerances as they were "gained" during adolescence.

What foods should you avoid if you have gallbladder pain?
Twice in six months, I've had attacks of gallbladder pain which my chiropractor has treated successfully. Are there certain foods you would recommend avoiding to prevent future attacks? And secondly, are there foods which are comforting to a gallbladder? I know I need to avoid high fat foods, which seems to be my trigger. I definitely want to hold on to what is mine and avoid having a cholecystectomy! Any tricks to end the pain quickly when an attack does strike? Thanks so much for your help!

    • ANSWER:
      HI SweetIlene

Here are some ideas to resolve your issue.

      Natural Cures

Most gallbladder surgeries can be easily avoided through nutritional and natural intervention, with emphasis on identification, avoidance, and treatment of food allergies.

Diet: Identify and avoid all foods to which you are allergic or sensitive, especially eggs, milk and dairy products, gluten, wheat and dairy products. Also reduce your saturated and overall fat intake, keeping it below 20 percent of the total foods you eat, and eliminate all processed and hydrogenated fats. But do not cut fat completely, as this can actually increase your chances of developing gallstones. Monounsaturated fats (olive oil, coconut oil) are the best fats to include in your diet.

Be sure to eat less, as well, since overeating places stress on the gallbladder. At the same time, be sure to eat breakfast, don`t skip meals, and eat a balanced and healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes and other vegetarian sources of protein. Increase your intake of dietary fiber to improve bowel movements, and avoid refined carbohydrates, which can cause gallstone formation. Overall, eat less animal foods, remove processed foods and move toward a whole foods vegetarian-oriented diet. If you are overweight, lose the weight, but slowly and sensibly.

Good foods to include in your diet are black cherries, pears, beets (raw and cooked), fresh steamed and water sautéed greens such as beet tops collards, kale, plenty of steamed broccoli and cauliflower, snack on seasonal fruits, eat plain organic yogurt, as well as more raw foods in general.

Gallbladder Flush: Flushing the gallbladder of stones is a common natural cure and practice of holistic physicians. It is quite easy.

For six days do the following: Eat a whole foods diet with no animal products and no processed, refined foods. Eliminate all flour products, eat whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice. Limit dairy products to organic plain yogurt. Drink plenty of raw, fresh apple juice, and eat applesauce and organic apples as both meals and snacks. Eat fresh leafy green salads, steamed vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and vegetable soups.

On the afternoon of the seventh day, have 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil mixed with 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice. Drink all at once and skip your evening meal. Go to bed early (no later than 10 p.m.), and sleep with your right knee tucked up to your side. In the morning, you should eliminate the gallstones, which will appear greenish yellow. Make sure your having regular bowel movements and if not be sure to do a colon cleanse first, before the GB flush. Six months to a year after your first gallbladder flush, you should repeat the process.

The protocol just described is a very gentle non-invasive gallbladder flush. See Cleansing and Detoxification for a more advanced detailed protocol.

Herbs: Combine the tinctures of wild yam, fringetree bark, milk thistle, and balmony in equal parts and take one teaspoon of this mixture three times a day. An infusion of chamomile or lemon balm can also be taken regularly throughout the day.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. I suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.

Juice Therapy: The following juice combinations can help improve gallbladder health: carrot, beet, cucumber, radish, and fresh dandelion roots, with a clove of garlic; or grape, pear, grapefruit, and lemon.

Lifestyle: Choose non-toxic cleaning supplies and personal body care products.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following supplements can help relieve gallbladder symptoms: digestive enzymes with each meal, vitamin B-complex, vitamin C, choline, inositol, lipotrophic factors, alfalfa tablets, acidophilus, lecithin, and the amino acid, L-taurine. Peppermint oil sipped in water throughout the meal can also be helpful.

Topical Treatment: Castor oil packs placed over the gallbladder can speed relief of symptoms.

      Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating gallstones and gallbladder disorders: Acupuncture, Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, and Osteopathy

Toxins overloading into your system from chemicals, additives, processed and junk foods, as well as excessive saturated animal fat in the diet, contribute to gallbladder problems. If the liver becomes overloaded with excess saturated fats, the gallbladder gets stressed and inflamed. This excess of saturated fats become cholesterol deposits and when enough have formed, they crystallize with the bile to form gallstones.

Women get gallstones four times as frequently as men, especially women over 40 years old who are fair-skinned, and overweight. Twenty percent of adults over 65 years of age get gallstones that create problems and pain. Over half a million surgeries are performed each year to remove gallbladders due to gallbladder disorders, the most common being gallstones. And this can be easily be avoided by cleansing the body of toxins.

Constipation, food allergies (especially to milk products and eggs), digestive disorders (especially caused by a deficiency of hydrochloric acid), intestinal diseases, an excessively low-fiber diet, dental disturbances, parasites, rapid weight loss, and stress can all cause or contribute to gall stones and other gallbladder disorders. For lasting relief of symptoms, all of these factors must be addressed if they are present.

      Best of health to you

What foods are conducive to proper regularity? What foods should be avoided?
Also, I heard somewhere that there's this colon cleansing tea you can drink to expel built up waste and toxins in your body. Does anyone have more info on that?

    • ANSWER:
Cleansing products are nothing but laxatives. Nothing will clean your system except for a healthy diet. It implies to decrease animal protein and fat, eat more organics, more fruit, vegetables, nuts, decrease sugar intake, sodas, quit cigarette smoking, exercise at least 2-3 times per week. Also to have fiber supplementation every day. You can be regular just by adding 1 scoop of soluble fiber to water or orange juice, 1 glass every morning. If you eat 3 portions of vegetables and fruit per day you will not need any cleansing teas. The built up they talk on TV is a hook to sell nothing more than a laxative.

What are some common foods that can be eaten to prevent diarrhoea?
The best foods to be eaten with ibs or any type of sensitivity to food to prevent diarrhoea?

    • ANSWER:
You may be eating too much fibre. Fibre is contained in unrefined carbs (wholemeal bread, pasta etc) and fruits and vegetables.

However if you arent eating these foods your body can become ill in which case fruit and vegetables will help to cleanse your bowels.

What are the best foods to eat to detox your body, to get ready for a diet?
I've been on a diet for a while now, and I have not seen any results. I did not detox or cleanse my body before I started. Is that the reason I have failed? Will cleansing my system help with the weight loss?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know if detoxing your body will help you achieve your dieting goals, but cranberry juice is a good detoxer. Are you exercising as well? One of the key components to losing weight is using more calories than you consume, so that your body has to take the extra needed calories (your body's energy source) from your fat cells. So my suggestion is just eat low calorie food, and exercise a lot. Ride a bike or walk to school or work instead of drive. Go for a jog instead of watch TV. Or find something you enjoy doing that is physically active, for me it is playing sports..

sex is a good (and fun!) form of exercise as well, there is even something called sexercise where you purposely do difficult positions and other things like that to make your sex more of a workout. Look it up.
Also, don't expect to lose 20 pounds instantly. Losing weight in a healthy manner is a slow process. If you lose 2 pounds a week your doing darn good! Make a plan and stick to it, you can do it!

What is the best cleanse to boost immunity and regain health?
What is the best candida cleanse to boost immunity and get a bit heathier. I have recently quit smoking and have a bit of a whitish tongue and some bumps on the back of my tongue from Acid Reflux Disease. Would should I do to cleanse myself? Any tips from other people that have tried cleansing? Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
      Congratulations on stopping smoking.

There are many products you can purchase that can help to flush out your system but I must warn that you may also flush out important flora, or good bacteria in your digestive tract. I recommend the book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. The making of whey is very simple you can buy organic yogurt at the grocery and drain it through a cheese cloth or dish towel into a jar. You use the whey to lacto ferment vegetables, the most healing of these is the beet Kavas which uses 2 large beets, 1Tsalt, enough water to fill a 2 qt jar after all ingredients are added and 1/4 C whey you leave them set 2 days to ferment then move to refrigeration.

According to Her book "Periodic fasting is an age-old method for restoring and maintaining health. FASTING ON MEAT OR VEGETABLE BROTH OR ON LACTO-FERMENTED VEGETABLE JUICES allows your enzyme-producing and digestive mechanisms to rest so that other enzyme systems can work at repair, detoxification and healing. .... Healing fasts work best when carried out in conjunction with a program if intestinal cleansing through enemas or colonics."

But the investment in 2 beets and a tub of organic yogurt is much cheaper, natural, and effective than expensive cleanses. Most cleanses you buy are attempting to recreate a similar effect but can not be the fresh natural effect you get with a lacto fermented fresh product.. She recommends you use this beet Kavas in you cooking regularly it has a sour almost like vinegar taste but will help with your digestion. On going I recommend you ad probiotics which you can purchase at a health food store to regulate the yeast and other helpful bacteria in your digestive tract.

Regarding you Reflux I used to suffer from this as well and I have been seeing a naturopath to get off all of the meds the Prilosec, and similar drugs stop your body from absorbing some of the vital nutrients you eat so you would do well to treat this naturally. I have found the acid is due to an imbalance in my bodies acidity and alkalinity. I have found a great cure squeeze 1 organic lemon into a 20 oz glass filled with ice. ad 2-3 T grade b maple syrup (to ad sweetness and to ad minerals) and fill the rest of the way with water, you can adjust the ingredients to your liking. You will find 1 lemon a day will lower your bodie's acidity and keep you from having acid reflux.

      Hope this helps

Should I avoid any certain types of foods before a professional colonic treatment?
Also should I eat more of any particular food? I steer clear mostly of processed foods and think I eat quite healthily in general. Is three days a suitable length of time to change my eating habits in preparation? Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
In reality you don't need to change anything. Sometimes it's best to take a warm water enema before your appointment, but not necessary. Remember, one session is not enough for a complete cleansing, it takes between 3 and 5.

What foods are good for your immune system?
What foods are good for your immune system?

    • ANSWER:
Raw and organically grown,.. "unprocessed" and "unrefined" foods are life building and strengthening foods.

... Raw, organic fruits and veggies are cleansing and revitalising foods which will help to strengthen the immune system over time. ........... This is especially true of the dark green leafy veggies such as raw spinach, lightly steamed kale, broccoli rob, parsley, etc. ..... but red and yellow bell peppers,... carrots,.... celery, broccoli, etc.. are also very valuable.

Red fruits are very good. This is the likes of red grapefruit, cherries, rasberries, strawberries etc.
........... Mixing freshly squeezed organic lemon juice (unsweetened), with your drinking water is very good.

If you eat red meat,.. you would do well to only eat "organically raised",.. "grass fed" beef or bison. .... This is healthy meat that is harder to find and is more expensive,.. but is well worth it. ... cattle are not designed by nature to digest grains (which is what they are fed by the industry in order to fatten them up for a greater profit),.. feeding them grains,.. creates health problems that are passed on to the person who consumes that meat. ... The two main problems are that the fat content of the grain fed meat is abnormally high,.. and also the grain fed animals develop abcesses in their stomachs due to their not being able to properly digest the grains. Then they are given antibiotics, and this is consumed by the person who eats that meat. ..... They are also fed steroids to make them larger,.. and this too is passed on to the consumer. ........... So stick with only organic, grass fed beef.

Some other foods that enhance the immune system are raw, fresh, spoon crushed garlic clove. .... Raw onion. ......... Raw, organically raised milk. (this is "live" milk and is full of nutrients, probiotics, enzymes and healthy fats that are not found in commercially produced milk.

Organic brown rice is an excellent mild detoxifyer and source of protien and fiber.

Fermented organic foods are excellent, such as organic pickles, Kiefer, sauerkraut, miso etc.

High quality fish oil is excellent and an important source of healthy fatty acids.

Avoid all sugar, refined foods and refined carbohydrates, such as cakes, cookies, breads, pasta, etc. .... Avoid all soda and coffee and all "processed" foods. ... These will all weaken the immune system. .. Also avoid fruit juices, as these contain a concentration of sugar that is not good for the body.

This is all a good start,.. but there certainly is more to add to this. ... For now,.. remember that when you cook foods, you destroy much of the nutrients and digestive enzymes within the food. ... Raw food is "Live" food,.. which still has the vital fuel intact. ... Organically raised food contains a higher and more balanced nutient base and is much more devoid of chemical poisons, such as pesticides and preservatives that will only weaken the body that consumes them.

      Be Well ...

Asparagus contains asparigine - a chemical alkaloid that boosts kidney performance, thereby improving waste removal from the body.

Brussel Spouts help in stimulating the kidneys and pancreas. This helps in better cleansing of cells.

Beets are natural diuretic foods that attack floating body fats and fatty deposits.

Oats contain silica - a natural diuretic.

Cabbage is known to aid breakage of fatty deposits, especially around the abdominal region.

Carrots are a rich source of carotene that speeds the metabolic rate of the body and hastens removal of fat deposits and waste.

Lettuce aids better metabolism and flushing of toxins.

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C that aid the metabolism and release of water from the kidney to flush out waste.

Other than the other excellent properties that Garlic possesses, it is a natural diuretic food that aids breakage of fat. Horseradish, raw onions and radish speed up your metabolism.

      Good luck xx

What food help reduce cellulite and prevent it?
Any healthy foods that helps reduce cellulite and also that help prevent it . If I run will it help to tone up my legs ? If yes how many minutes or hours do I have to run ? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Sofia

I found an article in a UK paper called the Daily Mail that gave the following advice:-
      Foods to avoid:
•Salt. Too much salt upsets the body's regulation of fluids. Drinking water helps your body to flush out toxins. But too much salt makes your body retain the water you consume - and therefore toxins. All convenience foods - including many tinned and frozen foods.
•Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Try organic tea or coffee instead and have no more than two cups per day. Restrict your alcohol intake to a glass of good wine a night.
•Saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats -particularly heated fats.
      •Dairy and wheat products.
•Fatty foods such as red meats and full fat dairy products.
•Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, bread and rice.

      Foods to eat more of:
Raw foods. Try eating at least half your food raw by snacking on fruit , vegetables and salads.
•Sweet peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, parsley and citrus fruits are all excellent cellulite fighters as they contain bioflavanoids, which help strengthen capillaries and so prevent the orange peel effect.
•Whole grain foods, such as brown rice and granary bread.
      •Herb teas.
All these foods help to cleanse your body of the toxins that cause cellulite.

    • ANSWER:
Take psyllium husk and coconut oil before every meal. This is a very gentle but effective colon cleanse. The psyllium husk is pure fibre and will 'scrub' the inside walls of your digestive tract. The coconut oil lubricates everything so foods passes through more easily and is also antibacterial and antifungal so it cleans. Also regularly eat foods that are high in Probiotics. I like kefir (strawberry flavour tastes like a fruit smoothie!) But yogurt and fermented vegetables are also good sources. Good bacteria helps you digest better

Drink bitter teas after each meal. This may not sound pleasant but bitter foods stimulate your liver and help strengthen it so it works better. Look for ingredients like dandelion, burdock, milk thistle, licorise, cinnamon, etc. Don't take capsules, they are way less effective

Drink lots of water, this flushes out your urinary tract (kidneys, etc). If your tap water has fluoride added, drink bottled instead. Fluoride is a chemical that is not good for you! If your water is fluoride-free but contains chlorine, boil it or leave it out overnight. The chlorine will evaporate and leave your water clean but chemical free

And obviously, if you really want to detox, you should avoid putting more 'toxins' in your body. This means you should avoid all drugs (including pain killers, cold meds, etc), alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods

What does it mean to internally cleanse your body?
Does it mean to get rid of the toxins that are stored in your body from the fatty and processed foods you eat? If so, how do you get rid of these toxins? Thx.

    • ANSWER:
It means drinking lots of water to flush out toxins. Sometimes a detox requires drinking lots of juices either fruit smoothies or really horrible tasting green goo which im told is energy boosting, nutritious and packed with vits and other cancer fighting properties. Wheat grass juice is meant to be good and aloe vera juice.I heard some detoxes involve eating sea weed yuck. Also internally means things like colonic irrigation (google it) ha ha.. Drink water, eat veg and fruit and lots of smoothies.Swimming is very good for you too. Sometimes internal detox is the mind too so some yoga mediatation or even going for a walk in the park would help. There are alot of book you can buy and health food stores so get going.

What are some high fiber and protein foods and low carb?
I need a long list of foods I can eat to lose weight I heard to eat high fiber and protein and low carb foods. I love all kinds of foods. Seafood all meats fruits veggies cheese so I wanna know what I can eat that will help. I'm going to be doing cardio exercises about everyday. I'll eat about 6 small meals a day to get my metabolism going and drink alot of water. If you have any other helpful hints that will be appreciated!

What if you do the master cleanse/ lemonade diet during the weekdays for a month? Is it still effective?
I just want to be able to do what I want on the weekends without worrying about cleansing. I would like to know if you can still loose weight if you only do the diet Monday through Friday and if the cleansing benefits are effected by eating/drinking alcohol on the weekends? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I think that would be a very hard thing to do. The first three days of the master cleanse is when your body is getting used to not eating solid food, so you would be repeating your hardest days every week. Plus if your eating is not good on the weekend, you will lose ground and be frustrated.

You can actually get great results from just the basic 10-day cleanse and then go longer if you want to. If you do the master cleanse exactly as designed, your body will purge toxins and lose up to 2 pounds a day in a healthy way (not like a crash diet), and your cravings for unhealthy food will change. The experience can put you on a whole new path.

If you haven't already, I would recommend picking up The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs so you understand the original design and not someone's improvement. It's a fast read and cheap - very inspirational too.

How do I cleanse my body after eating heaps?
I just ate heaps of food for breakfast and you can't even call them breakfast foods. I had lots of biscuits and stuff, and now I feel really bad and sick. I'm going out to dinner tonight with my dad, how can I clean all the junkfood out of my system before then?

what cleanse should i do to just start my weight loss?
I want to do a cleanse to jump start my weight loss and i wanted some suggestions. I really lack discipline and that is why i never stay on a weight loss program. I want a cleanse to help me to jump start a lifestyle change. I've heard about the master cleanse/lemonade diet. I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions. I am not starting a cleanse to just lose weight for a specific event, i want it to be a precursor to a lifestyle change.

    • ANSWER:
The basics of weight loss are not as complicated as people make it out to be. You need to simply change your diet to healthy whole foods, fruits and veggies and get plenty of exercise.

It all depends on what you want to get out of it. Check out my fitness blog for more fitness info and ideas:

How do you cleanse you liver and keep it clean?
I read that consuming certain foods can cause a buildup called "fatty liver" and that when you have this is slows down you fat burning metabolism. So I want to know how to make sure your liver is clean, which foods to eat and which to avoid etc.
I do work out daily, and I eat healthy most of the time.

    • ANSWER:
Going to quote you real fast:

"I read that consuming certain foods can cause a buildup called "fatty liver" and that when you have this is slows down you fat burning metabolism."

It's actually far more complicated than that. I'm not going to go into everything here, but there are plenty of ways people burden their livers and destroy their organs -- much of the time willingly.

To "cleanse the liver," there's only two things you can do:

      1: Stop burdening the liver.
--- Typically this step involves doing >less.< Eat less, for example. Suck in less car exhaust, drink less cola, wash your hands less, shower less, etc. There are too many things to talk about here, so I'll just leave you with that and move on.

2: Resupply your liver with what it needs.
--- This step can be a huge problem for people, because there's so much misleading information out there. In fact, most of that misleading information has "clinical trial" stamped to it and is therefor approved by the government and the masses.
--- But whatever -- they'll do what they want. I'll tell you the truth: In some way, you need to get just about every basal element into your body, all in different amounts. Magnesium, for example -- or zinc, or molybdenum, or hydrogen, or strontium.
--- The liver needs many different materials to make tools with. If it can't make its tools, it can't repair itself or deal with the load its obligated to take on. You can cleanse you heart out with herbs and water and all sorts of things, but your liver will never be healthy without the elements it needs. This goes for the entire body.

So, start researching, but lookout for the liars. Apparently you want to lose weight, which is fine, but be more concerned about your body as an organism. Go on a fast using pure, filtered water or deep-ground well water (get it analyzed), and remineralize it with dark sea salt ("dark" meaning the darkest in color you can find), sea water, or concentrated sea water (w/ or w/o sodium removed). Doing just that, you can expect to healthily lose five to twenty pounds a week, depending of course on how much weight there is to lose and what your body's condition is at the time.

      Hope this helped.

EDIT: "Cleanse your heart out" was meant figuratively.

What foods are better for digestive health?
My stomach is often upset and rather than trying to avoid certain foods (because there seem to be so many of them that it is impossible to identify them all) I am curious to know if there are any foods that are supposed to be good for over-all digestive health, and if so, what are they? I know about yogurt already but is there anything else? Also are there any vitamins that are particularly helpful with this?

(I'm a vegetarian, by the way, but I eat cheese, fish & eggs.)

    • ANSWER:
      For Better Digestion Follow this:

      1. Every morning before breakfast, freshly squeeze the juice of 1 - 2 lemons in 250ml - 500ml of spring or filtered water. This small but effective daily routine will help to cleanse the stomach of left over 'debris' and remove any excess acid.

      2. Another daily drink taken late morning or sometime before lunch will complement the cleanse in 'Tip 1' . This can include 1tsp - 1 tbsp of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with 250ml - 500ml apple juice (freshly squeezed is even better). This drink will balance digestive juices, specifically for low or high levels of Hydrochloric acid (HCl).

      3. Avoid cold drinks while eating. Food is digested more efficiently at around body temperature, therefore cold fluid can slow down the digestive processes. If you must drink while eating, try hot water or herbal teas. Caffeine can cause excess production of HCl so should be avoided, as should alcohol.

      4. Have you ever heard of Swedish Bitters? The taste of bitter herbs, foods, juices etc, 20 - 30mins before eating will increase digestive function by encouraging the release of digestive enzymes, juices and acids.

      5. Specific self massage and exercise techniques used as part of a daily routine will also contribute to better digestion.

'LIVER EXERCISE' - This exercise massages the Liver and Gall Bladder, tonifying and cleansing these organs. It helps cope with abdominal wind, and assists digestion. Place the heel of the right hand on the right side of the body under the rib cage, and just above the hip bone. The fingers should point straight across the body. Pressing firmly, move the hand slowly across the body to the middle of the abdomen; you should end up with the heel of the hand over the navel. Repeat this action 10-20 times.

'STOMACH EXERCISE' - This exercise is similar to the Liver Exercise, but is applied to the other side of the body. It benefits the digestion, the Spleen, and the Pancreas, as well as the Stomach. Method: Place the heel of the left hand between the rib cage and the left hip, with the fingers pointing across the body. Move the hand firmly and smoothly across to the centre of the body, until it is over the navel. Repeat 10-20 times.

      6. Short term fasting is one way to allow the digestive system a well deserved break. However "first time fasters"should try it for a maximum of 24hrs.

Remember always to drink plenty of fruit and vegetable juice during your fast. Also plan your fasting for days when you will not be doing lots of hard physical work and can take plenty of rest.

      7. CHEW, CHEW, CHEW... One of the most important mechanisms of digestion, yet more often than not, the most forgotten!

Chewing is the first stage of digestion. It not only physically breaks down foods, but signals the organs to secrete their digestive juices (pancreatic enzymes, stomach acids etc) in order to prepare for the incoming foods.

Naturopaths believe that you should try to chew your food until it is near to a liquid consistency.

      8. 'Food Combining' can work well for many people. There are
books available which explain the reasons for food combining, for
example, 'The Hay Diet Made Easy: A Practical Guide to Food
Combining' by Jackie & Alexandra Habgood. 'Food Combining' is not only for weight loss but can assist problems due to an imbalanced digestive system.

Briefly, food combining involves the 3 main types of food/fuel i.e. Carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, rice), Proteins (meats, dairy, nuts, soya) and Fats (cooking oils, avocados). It is considered that one should not mix these types of food within one particular meal. For example, eat either carbohydrates alone or proteins alone, together with (non starchy) vegetables or salad.

      9. Colon Cleansing & Liver Cleansing through the use of herbs, foods and supplements will benefit the whole digestive system greatly. There are many companies and practitioners (Naturopathic) who recommend their own cleansing routines and you will find that many elements of the various routines will be similar.

Any method is good if it does the job! Colon Cleansing & Liver Cleansing are two of the most popular approaches to getting started with detox, and detox benefits every part of the body by helping the body remove toxins which otherwise slow down every organ and every body function. Counteract this tendency by using Colon Cleansing & Liver Cleansing.

      10. Here are some herbs known to help with excess digestive juices & acids in conditions such as Hiatus Hernia and Stomach Ulcers: For example a great digestive tea can be made by comgined the excellent herbs Meadowsweet, Fennel, Comfrey and Peppermint.

Slippery Elm Tea is a very soothing herbal tea, with a consistency like thin porridge. It is blended with water and drunk hot. Slippery Elm is also available in capsules as Slippery Elm Capsules, if you prefer this. Slippery Elm is a fantastic herb to soothe the bowel if there is IBS or Colitis.

Bayberry and Wild Yam can also be used in drops (tincture or fluid extract) or as capsules or tablets. These herbs will help to soothe and heal an ulcerated or 'colicky' type of condition. Wild Yam is a great antispasmodic - it relaxes muscles in spasm. It is particularly helpful for the liver and also the bowel. It is also used by women to relax the uterus which can relieve pain during periods or menopause.

Digestive Capsules or Drops are available as well as teas. Generally, take these for 3-4 months for a course, though you should start to see benefits - eg reduced indigestion - after 2-3 weeks. If not, see a herbalist for advice. Licorice Tea is made in the same way as Ginger Tea.

Cardamom, Cloves, Fennel, Ginger and Cinnamon can all be made into a tea to be drunk after a meal. Simply place some seeds in half a pint or so of water in a non-aluminium pan. Bring to a gentle simmer and let simmer for a few minutes. Strain and drink. If using fresh ginger, cut a few slices (a few mm thick) and do the same.

Foods such as Lemons, Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic, Onion, Leek, Rice, Root Vegetables, Papaya, Pineapple and Artichokes can all aid proper digestion. Try to include some of these foods into your general daily diet.

Good Luck! I hope this helps!

what are good foods/ fruits or drinks that would help with digestion and bowel movements?

How do I cleanse my body of impurities and fat?
I am wanting to cleanse my body of impurities and fat. How do I go about doing that?

    • ANSWER:
i guess you have reade something about that or seen on tv?
there is no need to do anything special - your body is cleansing itself with dietary fiber you get mostly from fruit and veggies.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
      8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Is it the suds/bubbles that are important for cleansing when washing dishes?
I'd heard that the suds/bubbles aren't actually relevant to cleansing with a batch of dishwater. Is this true, or are they the actual compound doing the cleaning and sanitation?

    • ANSWER:
The presence of suds indicates that the soap has not become saturated with grease or other matter such that it is no longer effective at cleaning the dishes.

When you start out with a sink full of fresh water and dish soap, you get lots of suds because all you have in solution is the soap and water. The soap molecules bond together, allowing small spaces to be filled with air and retain a structure (bubbles). When you introduce a dirty dish and begin scrubbing it, the chemical action of the detergent is to bond on a molecular level with any contaminants (grease, food, whatever).

Once that chemical bond takes place, the soap molecules will no longer bond to anything else - including other soap molecules. So, the soapy water will no longer have suds or bubbles. And, you know it's time to change the dishwater.

What have you eaten while on the master cleanse diet? Like raw veggies and salad? How much have you lost?
I have not read stanley burrough's book but he says you can eat only certain foods while on the diet. What are they?

    • ANSWER:
Food is not allowed on this diet. It is strictly liquid that you will be consuming. I have done 4 full days (I am now in day 5) and have lost 8 pounds. I will be doing it for the full 10 days and, if I keep losing at this rate, I will lose 20 pounds. When you come off the diet, you have to work your digestive system up to receiving whole foods. You need to do more research but here is the basic diet:

Days 1-10: Drink the "lemonade" and lots of distilled water (no tap or spring water)
Day 11: Drink lots of water and as much orange juice as you like
Day 12: Drink lots of water and drink chicken broth
Day 13: Start consuming "regular" food but start slow with fruits and veggies

P.S. The purpose of this diet is not to just lose weight (although that is the most popular reason for doing it). It is to wean you off of fatty foods and get you to eat fruits and veggies when you are done with the detox.

What happens when you eat bad food combinations?
I know that some food combinations are considered "bad combinations" to digestive health, etc. Like they say you're not supposed to eat fruit with anything else, meat and milk together, and so on.

However I am curious, what do they say with "happen" to you if you eat bad food combinations? And what is the worst thing that can happen?

Most of America does it everyday FYI.

    • ANSWER:
what I learned from a book called "fit for life" authors name Diamond,
fruits are digest from the saliva in you mouth as you chew them.
When you eat a protine such as meats, eggs, milk products your stomach produces acidic juices to break them down.
When you eat carbohydrates such as potatoes, breads, your stomach produces alkaline juices to break them down.
If you mix an acid and an alkaline together they null in-void each other. Your stomach keeps pumping in more juices, the food doesn't digest in the proper amount of time and starts to rot in you stomach. This action creates a lot of mucus which get absorbed in to the body, which could lead to various health problems.

So from this I get that its ok to eat veggies with meat or veggies with carbs. (veggies are simple carbs and digest well with either) .

fruit should be eaten alone and first thing in the morning. Reason for this is when you wake your body is going through its elimination cycle. This cycle ends as soon as you eat something that wakes up the juices in your stomach. Fruit is digested in the mouth and does not wake the stomach, therefor keeping the cleansing cycle going longer (I think that once you had your morning BM the cycle was over) for a more toxic free body.
The fruit sugar feeds the brain.

I started eating this way 24 years ago when I was pregnant with my last child and was very over weight. I gained very little weight during this pregnancy, had lots of energy and when I left the hospital I was at my pre-pregnancy weight. That never happened before!!!!.

And sad to say, yes you are right that most america does this every day, and you don't have to look very far to see the damage it is causing. the majority of us get up every day to highly processed cereal and pasteurized damaged milk or an egg mcmuffin.

What is the most safe and effective way to cleanse your colon?
I would like to cleanse my colon but I want a safe as well as effective way to do it. I know, the menu is so restrictive! I'm doing the slimquick cleanse also but i'm not following their menu at all. I'm actually following this diet that I saw in Woman's World magazine... Don't eat anything super bad for you unless in moderation! Good luck!

I am looking for a colon cleanse product/drink that is okay for diabetics to use?
I am diabetic and I want to do a cleanse before I start changing my diet for weight loss. But a lot of them require you to fast and I can't b/c I am diabetic. Do you know of any cleansing drinks or teas that are okay for diabetics?

    • ANSWER:
Colon cleansing has absolutely no medical benefit and is in fact harmful to the dietary tract. There is no "build up" of bad plaque in a normal system. We "cleanse" 24 hours a day through respiration, sweat, liver, and kidneys.
We can help by eating a healthy diet with minimal added sugar and salt. Lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods, beans, peas, and brown rice keep a system as healthy as it can be.
Minimal alcohol, caffeine, no soda. Read food labels. If you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body. Colon cleanses actually flush out the beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the digestive system.
Spend your money in the produce department instead of giving it away.
      Good luck.

What is a cleansing fast, and how do I do it safely without taking any medication?
My friend and I have been eating way too much of the nasty/unhealthy things, and we decided that we wanted to cleanse our bodies/detox. And I need a good plan or something of that nature. We do not want to take any supplements, or something to help us along. Preferably longer than a week something that builds on itself. You know what I mean?

    • ANSWER:
This is what I do and really works great.

First off, stay away from meat, sea foods, cheese, milk, butter, white bread, rice and pasta. Instead eat plenty of raw vegetables such as celery, carrot, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, avocado, salad or any other favorite vegetables and salads that you love. For carb - eat whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta in moderation. For protein eat avocado and/or fresh beans that you prepare at home. This is how to do prepare the fresh beans. Soak the beans for two hours in water and then drain and boil it until tender. Add your favorite seasonings, tomato, garlic olive oil and cook it a few more minutes. With this method, you can do similar dishes from whole lentils, chick peas and etc...

Drink apple cider vinegar mixed with water at least once a day. Drink hot tea made of just honey and lemon. Don't drink sodas, juice etc... Just drink purified warm water if you can. That certainly washes all the toxins out of your body. Iced cold water will not do that. It just makes everything stagnant in your body, which makes it stay longer. Go for warm water, trust me, you will love it once you get use to drinking it. I don't eat breakfast before I drink a purified hot water. A great remedy for constipation too. You will feel the hot water cleanse your body for good.

What causes vivid dreams during periods of low food intake or starvation?
I have heard from people who have either been deprived of food or were on a starvation diet that they had really vivid dreams; so what is the cause? Does the process of digestion take up too much energy that could otherwise be focused on dreams and dreaming or is it another phase of starvation where you are going delusional in your sleep, or something else?

    • ANSWER:
Yes fasting can give you more focused and detailed dreams. They say it happens because your mind and body is completely cleansed, therefore making your subconscious more able to be vivid. The food and medicine and drinks and whatever other chemicals we put in our body block our mind from doing this normally. So when our body is completely pure so is our mind. Its more of a mental thing than it is physical. It accomplishes almost the same thing as mediating on a regular basis would.

What are some good foods and drinks to help boost one's immune system?
And what exactly is in those foods and drinks that make them so good for the immune system?

    • ANSWER:
I applaud you in your interest in strengthening your immune system with food. As you may know, it is a challenge today to find foods that are mineral rich without added chemicals that are toxic.
The good news is it is possible to find healthy foods that are rich in vitamins, mineral, photonutrients, ect. for you body.

A place to start is looking for raw and organically grown fruits, vegetables, and meats.

      Here is a sampling.
Vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, collard greens, and spinach are the great source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fiber,

Fruits (like blueberries, bananas , acai, and mangoes.) are good sources of antioxidants and phytonutrients

Proteins containing amino acids aids in the growth and repair of your immune system. Some protein sources can be chlorella , eggs, organic meat and poultry, fish especially those high in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, trout and tuna.

Medicinal Mushrooms such as Shiitake, Reishi, Maitake, and Coriolus Versicolor (turkey tail) are wonderful for building your immune system up.

Drinks like Wheatgrass, Aloe vera juice, green tea, and white teas are excellent drink choices to boost your immune system. Holy tea is my favorite, since it also does a great job in cleansing my body and maintaining a healthy weight.

Whole grains like brown rice, millet, buckwheat, oats, and barley are also a valuable source of the vitamins, minerals and fiber that are an essential part of keeping the immune system healthy. Fiber helps cleanse the colon of toxins and helps prevent intestinal infections.

It is also important to avoid "bad" foods ("unprocessed" and "unrefined") that will weaken your immune system.

      Here is some suggestions:
Sugar contains no nutrients. Excessive sugar intake can deplete your body of several vitamins and minerals. Sugar impairs the ability of white blood cells to sweep up and kill bacteria. It also robs the body of key nutrients such as zinc that is vital for the immune function. Sugars food to avoid include soda pop, candy, many cereals, and ice cream.

Caffeine is a diuretic that contributes to the body's loss of important nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The acid in coffee eats away the villi of the small intestine, reducing their effectiveness in supporting nutrient assimilation.

Alcohol (when consumed in excess), is a poison to every system of your body. It depresses the nervous system, inhibits the bone marrow's ability to regenerate blood cells, is toxic to the liver, depletes B-vitamins, and is dehydrating.

Raw foods such as clams, oysters, sushi, very rare meats, and undercooked eggs contain infectious bacteria and intestinal parasites.

With the advent of pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizer and green harvesting, our fruits and vegetables lack vital nutrients. Today, it is necessary that our diet will need supplements to the food for the immune system.

What are some natural colon cleansing home remedies?
I have heard a few things about lemon, and I drink senna tea (which works wonders), but I'm wondering if anyone has any good home remedies? I think I'm going to try a cleanse and a fast, to jump start a diet, is that safe?

    • ANSWER:
To ensure a healthy colon, the most important thing for your diet is fiber. Fiber can help with digestion and help ensure regular bowel movements, which leads to a clean colon. One of the most fiber-filled foods is whole grains. There are many foods that can contain whole grains. These include whole wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice and whole grain cereals. You can also eat peanuts, rice cakes, sunflower seeds or beans. These foods all contain fiber and are also healthy.
