Colon Cleanse For Colonoscopy

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is colon cleansing different to prepping for a colonoscopy?
I'm thinking about doing a colon cleanse, but was wondering how similar the effects are to the prepping you have to do for a colonoscopy. I had that test not too long ago, so wondered if it would even be worth my while doing the cleanse?

    • ANSWER:
Yes- prepping for a colonoscopy is cleaning out your colon for a reason.

"Colon cleanse" quackery is cleaning out your colon for no good reason at all. Unless you LIKE diarrhea and hemorrhoids and a sore bottom.

  2. QUESTION:
What advantage does a colon cleanse have over a fleets?
I 'm going to have a colonoscopy soon. I will have to use fleets to clear my colon before the procedure. I was going to do a colon cleanse to improve the view for the procedure. However, the GNC rep I talked to said he didn't know why people didn't do a fleets every once in a while instead of a colon cleanse.

    • ANSWER:
Colon cleansing is typically herbal, whereas fleets is tried and true method :-)

  3. QUESTION:
Is colonoscopy prep basically the same as a colon cleanse?
I've been reading about colon cleansing kits online, and I came across an article that tells me you can follow the instructions for a colonoscopy prep and get the same results. Is this true?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you can basically follow the same prep. My husband had to get a colonoscopy and he prepped the same way that I do for my colon cleansing pills.

  4. QUESTION:
How do you go about giving yourself a colon cleanse?
This is gross but ever since I've heard that the average person has about 5 lbs. of impacted fecal matter lining their colon I've always wanted to do a colon cleanse. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
The notion that your colon needs cleansing is a triumph of marketing. There have been clinical studies, but none produced results backing the claims of colon cleansing products.

      What the studies did show:
--Fecal material does not collect, impacted on the colon walls.

--Fecal material in the colon is not toxic and cannot poison. (Or constipated people would be found dead on the street. "Look, Jerry, there's another one. Poor bastard didn't eat enough fiber.")

--Removing fecal material earlier than it might otherwise have exited the body does not improve health in any way.

Colon cleansing is quackery, designed to sell you a product you don’t need.

There is no legitimate reason to cleanse your colon unless you're getting a colonoscopy. (And the various colon cleansing products marketed on TV and in magazines are not what gastroenterologists want patients to use.)

Flushing everything out of the colon is not the secret to weight loss or better health. It results in weight loss not because it's healthy but because poop and future poop weighs something. You’ll feel better because you *believe* you’ve done something healthy, not because you *have* done something healthy.

More beneficial than a colon cleansing is consistently eating whole grains, plenty of fruit and vegetables, and drinking enough to be properly hydrated all the time. Spend your health care dollars and time on something that's actually beneficial.

  5. QUESTION:
How much does a colon cleanse cost?
When I DID have insurance, I asked for one and my doctor said no. She wouldn't even examine my colon maybe because I don't fall into the stereotype of the older male patient who get VIP treatment.

Anyway, lately I see little drops of blood from my behind and things just don't feel right back there, plus I have a family history of colon cancer. I currently no longer have health insurance. Can I just walk into a hospital and request a colon cleanse and if so how much out of pocket would it cost?

    • ANSWER:
You don't need a colon cleanse you need a COLONOSCOPY! That can detect cancer. A colon cleanse will simply empty your bowels of feces. That's not going to do much for you. If you really want to clean the pipes get a Fleets Enema from the store and take Metamucil. That will clean you out. Call your local hospital they may have programs for uninsured at risk people with a family history to get a colonoscopy. Or have a sliding scale fee. Out of pocket would be expensive because they sedate you for the procedure wich always costs waaaaay too much!!

  6. QUESTION:
What's the best colon cleanse product to use?
With so many different colon cleansing products on the market with a HUGE difference in price (.00 up to 0.00) how does one go about picking one? I want one that works, but I'd rather not pay 0.00. I've read tons on the internet so now I'd like to know YOUR personal experiences with specific products. Which have you used, which do you like, which don't you like and why. Please only those who have done a cleansing answer. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Fleets Phosphate ! I have to have colonoscopys regularly and find the foul taste can be mitigated drinking ice cold ginger ale. That and the fact it works pretty well. Provided you are doing it for a medical exam. Otherwise....you are in for a night of pain.

  7. QUESTION:
can a colonoscopy show if you have the membrane that colon cleansing is suppose to remove?
colon cleansing is advertised constantly on my local radio station, I go for a colonoscopy every 3 years will this show if I have a membrane that the cleansing is suppose to remove ???
read the question before passing judgement,,,I don"t go around looking for an enema

    • ANSWER:
the body is really an amazing organ - as long as you have a good diet and drink plenty of liquids - esp water, you don't need to go "cleaning out your system" we're not a car. There is actually a lot of different things going on inside our bodies and doing colon cleansings can cause an inbalance in the natural state of affairs. We have certain "good" bacteria in our body doing what it's supposed to do - you don't want to wash them out! colon cleansing is just what the other guy said - a way to make a bunch of $ off of people.
there are some times a reason for what's called a high colonic enema (basically what is advertised as a colon cleansing)- but that's something that should only be done by a health care professional and only for certain reasons. they really aren't the most fun thing in the world to go through - why anyone would to pay someone a bunch of $ to do that when it really isn't necessary is beyond me.
Did the Dr. recommend you go in every 3 years? or is that something you decided to do?

added - I'm not sure who you think is passing judgment - I'm not seeing it - you asked about colonics - people are answering the question. I certainly wasn't meaning too, I just think it's a very unnecessary thing to do - why put something foreign into the body that isn't needed and could do more harm.

  8. QUESTION:
Is there something that works the same as How Healthy: Super Colon Cleanse 1800 I can buy at a drugstore?
In case you didn't know, How Healthy: Super Colon Cleanse 1800 is supposed to help you lose weight and clean out your colon. But I can't seem to find it at a drugstore where I live. Is there a product that works the same I could use and get the same effects?

    • ANSWER:
Who told you you needed to "cleanse" your colon?
Gastroenterologists repeatedly state this "mucoid plague" promoted by non medical practitioners does not exist. They have yet to find any during a colonoscopy.
The best way to cleanse and detox is to stop eating and drinking processed and refined foods.
Get hold of a liver. Oh, you have one? Great.
Now just stand there and let it detoxify your body. Partner it with some kidneys and you've got the most efficient body cleanse and detox system known to man.
There is no build up of bad plaque, toxins, or sludge in a normal, reasonably healthy system.
If this was the case we would have people dying left and right from malnutrition since their small intestines couldn't absorb nutrients. The majority of the water from food and what we drink is reabsorbed through the colon, if our colons were clogged we would all be walking around looking like sponges right?
Detoxing is ridding the system - liver, kidneys, and intestines of toxins both internal and environmental. Our liver and kidneys aren't clogged with toxins. Otherwise we would be dead. The liver does in fact get layered with fat if we become overweight.
We "cleanse and detox" naturally 24 hours a day through respiration, sweat, liver, kidneys, urine, and feces.
We can help by eating a healthy diet with minimal processed and refined foods. They are loaded with additives, concentrates, and preservatives mostly in added sugars and salts.
Lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods, lean meat cuts, fresh fish, beans, peas, brown rice, raw nuts, and barley keep a system as healthy and as clean as it can be.
      Minimal alcohol, caffeine, soda.
Read food labels. If you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body.
A healthy high fiber diet of whole fresh foods works every time. Increases the speed and efficiency of the digestive system and helps the body rid itself of both normal internal and environmental toxins.
Cleanses actually flush out the beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the digestive system.
Search "gut flora" to learn about the beneficial bacteria we need in our colon.
We have more beneficial bacteria in our digestive systems than all the cells in our bodies!
Did you know the digestive system is one of the largest contributors to our immune system?
Spend your money in the produce department to speed your detox.
      Good luck and good health.

  9. QUESTION:
Is it ok to do a colon cleanse if a person has IBS?
I have IBS but I want to do a colon cleanse just to be healthier and for more energy.

    • ANSWER:
What makes you think a colon cleanse will make you healthier? For the most part all colon cleansing products are scams. Colon cleansing is wholly unnecessary and a complete waste of time and money. Regardless of hype, regardless of ingredients, regardless of method, regardless of testimonials, colon cleansing is quite purely and simply medical quackery. The one exception to this is when it’s prescribed medically as in preparation for an examination such as colonoscopy.

The main reason it's called a scam is because the colon is a continuously self-cleaning system. Everyone knows that food goes in at the top of the GI tract and the leftover waste material quite naturally comes out the other end.

There is little scientific evidence to support the benefits of colon cleansing It's generally unnecessary and at times may even be harmful. Although doctors prescribe colon cleansing as preparation for medical procedures such as colonoscopy, most don't recommend it for detoxification. Their reasoning is simple: The digestive system and bowel naturally eliminate waste material and bacteria — your body doesn't need enemas or special diets or pills to do this.

If you are seriously considering colon cleansing, consider trying these steps first:

      * Drink plenty of fluids, including water
      * Eat a diet rich in fiber
      * Get regular exercise

These simple step will get the same result, and you saved your money.

  10. QUESTION:
Has anyone else experienced nothing at all after taking MoviPrep prior to a colonoscopy?
I have been very prepared to get my first colonoscopy over with this morning. However, I began the mandatory colon cleansing around 6 pm last night and experienced no bowel movement whatsoever. I followed the MoviPrep instructions exactly and absolutely nothing. I poop all the time (diarrhea) and then they tell me to down some heavy duty laxative that tastes like salt and this doesn't make me go! What the hell is going on?

    • ANSWER:
By now you should be passing liquid and it should be starting to become clear in colour. Are you bloated? as this may be why nothing much is happening. Plus they won't do a colonoscopy unless your bowel is totally clear.

  11. QUESTION:

I always hear of new colon cleansers everywhere I turn, and I want to know where I a could order a free smaple of a colon cleanser online without wasting my time. Also, how are you supposed to use colon cleanser as a weight loss supplement?

    • ANSWER:
You will definitely lose weight. But it is only the weight of undigested food and waste, not any stored body fat. And it will just be replaced.
Gastroenterologists repeatedly state this "mucoid plague" promoted by non medical practitioners does not exist. They have yet to find any during a colonoscopy.

Who said I was doing it to loose weight?Bit off topic don't you think?
I havent tried them before but thanks:)

    • ANSWER:
Another one buys the colon needs cleaning stupidity, yes stupiidity. You DO realize that is nothing but an overpriced laxative, right? WORK? Do what? You ever had a colonoscopy because if you had you would realize there is a procedure you perform before to clean the colon and you would find that absent your regular bowel movement there is no 25 lbs of sludge that has built up over time.

Eat less, exercise more and stop with the cleansing bs BEFORE you wake up 10 years from now and can not have a bowel movement at all because of your over indulging in LAXATIVES to lose weight!

  15. QUESTION:
difference between colon cleanse and colonoscopy?
before you take a colonscopy, you drank some liquid. Does this liquid do the same as having a colon cleanse?

    • ANSWER:
To perform a colonoscopy, we need to clean the colon out to see all the areas so we can remove polyps so they don’t grow into colon cancer. This is actually a “colon cleanse” but very aggressive to have the whole colon perfectly clean. A colon cleanse is usually a purgative laxative that will make you have multiple bowel movements but not as thorough as the cleanse for a colonoscopy.

      Hope this helps!

  16. QUESTION:
Do you need to stay hydrated during a colon cleanse?
Also, Is there a recommended diet when you do the cleanse? Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
I'm not sure what you mean by colon cleanse, but there are very few reasons you would need to clean out your colon. If you are going to get a colonoscopy, than your doctor should have given you something to mix up and drink beforehand, and given you instructions on what else to eat/drink in preparation. If you are doing some kind of cleanse that is not supervised by a doctor, you're running the risk of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, diarrea or even constipation. Society is weird about these things... every organ in your body is made to perform certain functions (waste removal and some absorption in the colon's case). You don't need to help it, because in most cases, you will actually be hurting it. Talk to a doctor, or avoid the "colon cleanse" completely.

  17. QUESTION:
Can a 16 year old get a colon cleanse to lose weight and still be healthy?
After the cleanse, will the shape remain the same?

    • ANSWER:
I use epsom salts and honey and water- epsom salts are used to help have looser stools when you are constipated and good for you- it softens the colon to get stuff out of the colon and you must not eat that day either. It even removed fat from my liver- my doctors were shocked because when i went in they said the bad fat in my liver was gone

also a good way to go is just have him do what we have to do to clean out our colon for a colonoscopy- use miralax, gatorade so he won't get dehydrated and dulcolax pills

it will not help to lose weight tho sorry

  18. QUESTION:
I want to start the new year with a body cleanse. I need help!?
I want to start the new year with a body cleanse. After researching, I have found alot of information about Bentonite Clay and Psyllium Husk. Can anyone give some advice regarding these items (like how much to take or how often) or a body (or colon) cleanse that you recommend? I really want something that works. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If there is anything in your colon that needed cleansing out you would have been dialing 911 instead of posting this question. I have had 2 colonoscopies with pictures and I can tell you that if you take a laxative, drink liquids, and poop until water comes you are as cleansed as you are going to get and this does nothing to keep you healthy if you are eating a regular diet. The clay and husk do nothing to help you either.

  19. QUESTION:
Are those colon cleanse photos for real?
I recently had a colonoscopy. I was very well cleaned out before the procedure, and I never saw any of the ropy lumpy things they show photos of. And the doctor would not have been able to do the procedure if those ropy things were in the way.

So does this mean I never had the ropy things, or the prep got rid of them?

Or does it mean that those ads are totally fake?

    • ANSWER:
those things do come out when you do a colon cleanse, what isn't soo clear though is whether those things are in you to begin with or whether the colon cleanse products are the cause of them, which seems likely

  20. QUESTION:
what can I do to reduce my risk of getting colon cancer?
It runs in our family,my dad had to have half of his taken out,My sister had colon cancer and may have wear a bag the rest of her life. I know there is no substiute of
being checked frequently. What measures can I take?

    • ANSWER:
If you have one of the rare hereditary colon cancers in your family you should check to see if you have the gene there is a 50/50 chance you do. If you do not your risk is the same as everyone else’s and if you do the best thing you can do is have regular colonoscopies. Your GI doctor is the best to advise you as he or she knows your history and the results of your tests.
Smoking is a risk factor for colon cancer, but the data is mixed on diet. Of course a healthy diet does help in other aspects of your health so it would be a good thing anyway.

EDIT: DO NOT use a colon cleanse. That is the most ridiculous piece of quackery out there and can cause potential harm.

  21. QUESTION:
Has anyone used the colon cleansers you can get at a health food store? Which is the best one to use?
Need to cleanse colon, but don't want to use a laxative. Need to know what is the best colon cleanser you can get.

    • ANSWER:
Why do you need to cleanse your colon? There are several products on the market that claim colon health but since these are over the counter thing no clinical studies have been done. Every manufacturer can "hire" a panel of experts to claim their product as a winner.
If you suspect something is wrong, go to a doctor and get tested. A colonoscopy procedure is very easy and comfortable. The only discomfort is the laxative that you will have to drink before the procedure but this only for less then a day so you will be able to do it.

  22. QUESTION:
What exactly happens when you colon cleanse?
And what does it do for you?

    Does it hurt?

    What are the risks?

    • ANSWER:
A colon cleanse means just what it says--it cleans all the debris out of your colon. What happens depends on the method you use. You can take oral products or do an enema. Oral products may be mild or strong. The mild products cause your bowels to move more. You will go to the bathroom more often and have softer stools with maybe some gas. It is not usually uncomfortable. The stronger products can cause cramping and sometimes gas. You may be given one of these products by your doctor prior to a colonoscopy.

Enemas also come in various forms and involve flushing your colon out with some type of liquid. That can be messy, uncomfortable and risky if you don't take proper precautions.

  23. QUESTION:
What laxative, in preparation for colonoscopy, caused kidney damage?
I've been informed that, recently, a laxative used to cleanse the colon prior to a colonoscopy was found to cause kidney damage. Since a family member may have used it, I'd like to find out which one it was, and information about it.

    • ANSWER:
When I had mine done at Kaiser they told me to use the Fleets Phospho soda laxative, which I believe has some kind of sodium based ingredient as the main mover :-) It was oral, not an enema. But, that's not the one named in the lawsuit. FDA recalled Zelnorm

  24. QUESTION:
does a colon cleanse make you feel bloated?
i started a colon cleanse and i know feel bloated all the time. almost like im pregnant, but i am 100% sure that i am not pregnant. does anyone know if the colon cleanse makes you feel bloated?

    • ANSWER:
you mean by diet change? the first few days to a week you'll feel more bloated tha usual, this is your body cleansing your intestine, all the fibre is binding and cleaning your bowels and intestines, let it do its job and you'll feel amazing after a week!
You could get a colonoscopy, then you will instantly feel de-bloated.

  25. QUESTION:
How can I immediately begin to Clean my Colon of Toxic Waste?
I'm not trying to goof around here but I was on a McDonalds diet (4 visits a week) for about a year straight. I am sure there is toxic waste in my system and I want to know ways i can cleanse my system as soon as possible like maybe drinking water? or eating many fruits and vegetables? maybe even a dietary supplement? please answer with any advice...thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Go to any drug store and buy an inexpensive bottle of magnesium citrate. That's what they give you to clean out before a colonoscopy. It's very gentle, but allow yourself a few hours to hang around the house. It'll clean you out.
If you have any questions, ask the pharmacist. Do not put it in the fridge. I think it tastes OK. You can add a little ice if you want.
Back to healthy food for you! :)

  26. QUESTION:
is taking colon cleansers different than preparing for a colonoscopy?
I am 27, and be en having digestive problems . In short I had and ultra sound and had a colonscopy. I have gallstones and will be having my gallbladder out tomorrow. But i was wondering if the prep i did for the colonoscopy is the same as if i had taking/performed a colon cleanse? Thanks for any help

    • ANSWER:
The prep for the colonoscopy is similar to a colon cleanse. The main difference being time. Colon cleanses take days to weeks to work, the prep takes overnight. The colon cleanse is gentle on the digestive track and generaly does not destroy the natural flora, the prep blows everything out including the good flora. So if y'all did the prep, replace the flora ( probiotics, natural yoghurt, real kefir, etc. ) and remember to get yer fiber, it's what the good flora eats to grow and causes candida to starve.

  27. QUESTION:
Will colon cleansing put your life on hold?
Im considering doing a colon cleansing program, have you seen the one with the incredible pictures of what comes out?

My question: has anyone tried it? And can you still go to work while doing it? Do you feel sick?

    • ANSWER:
If you want to 'cleanse' your system . . which is a scam, by the way, its not necessary . . but if you really want to clean out than just go to the store and buy a laxative. It's cheaper and works just as well.

If you have ever had a colonoscopy you will know that the 'colon cleansing' is a scam . . because for a colonoscopy you need to first cleanse the colon so that a gastroentrologist can examine the entire length of your colon with a camera. So, a laxative will work just as well to cleanse you out. Never spend money for something so easily to achieve naturally.

  28. QUESTION:
Has anyone ever heard that getting a colonoscopy is good for you to do to avoid cancer? Is there a way to?
cleanse your system completely (your colon) without getting a colonoscopy? I'd like to do it in a healthy way and get rid of any impurities. Your help is appreciated. No rude comments or sarcasm please.

    • ANSWER:
I think you're confused as to what a colonoscopy is.

A colonoscopy is a camera that is inserted up the colon so the doctor can check for any polyps. Any growths are removed and sent for biopsy. I believe the procedure is done starting at age 50, perhaps earlier for those at higher risk.

Colonoscopy's are healthy and recommended for everyone of a certain age.

I believe you are talking about colon cleansings.

I think they are a load of crap, no pun intended. Your body is self cleansing. Eat lots of good food and fiber, and that should be enough. Many doctors do not recommend a colon cleansing.

  29. QUESTION:
Is it ok for anyone to use a colon cleanser?
I don't need to lose weight or anything, but I don't exactly eat healthy, and I saw on the news, that the colon cleanser is good for not just men, but also women, and that it cleans gunk out and helps prevent colon cancer. Is it only for people trying to avoid colon cancer or who want to lose weight, or can someone who wants to be healthy use it. I just don't want to take anything that will hurt me if I don't need it.

    • ANSWER:
I personally don't believe that these cleaners remove "gunk" from your colon and I'll tell you why. I have had a colonoscopy (where doctors run a camera on a tube through your colon looking for tumors or polyps). To prepare for that you are given a cleansing with laxatives and enemas and put on a restricted diet for a couple of days before. If there is a lot of gunk left over, the doctors would not be able to see the wall of the colon to detect these tumors or polyps. For years people survived without the colon cleansers and were perfectly healthy. A lot of our health problems stem from processed foods and lack of exercise.

  30. QUESTION:
How to rid the body of fecal matter?
It was told that the average american has about 10 pounds of old fecal matter almost attached to their spine, close to their large intestine. How does one clean this out? All of it. If I wanted an extreme colonoscopy, what kind of pepper should I use as far as heat units. Some pepper has 16 million heat units, as supposed to cayenne which has 90,000 max.

    • ANSWER:
What you were told was wrong and who ever told you that was lying and was probably promoting a medically worthless 'colon cleansing' quack treatment.

  31. QUESTION:
How long would it take for a colon cleanser to leave the body?
    For instance colon-cure

    • ANSWER:
I can gladly help you with this, I just had a colonoscopy 2 days ago and had to do a complete colon cleansing. I'm fine now and have no problems 2 days at the most and thats it. Hope I helped.

  32. QUESTION:
Why do people get so concerned when dieting is involved?
I am a healthy male in my mid 20's and I find it extremely depressing how people react when I talk about dieting.

For example, this week I am doing a 2 day liquid diet for cleansing purposes. And once people found out about this my office it soon became a circle of concerned citizens, all focused on my health. As if I could just die by doing this...

Why are people so deathly afraid of dieting or changes to ones diet?

    • ANSWER:
This isn't really a diet issue. It's a psychological question about why you're so concerned about the reaction of other's that you find it "extremely depressing" and why they are concerned about your diet.

People become fearful of things they don't understand. So, you're answer is "ignorance". People who are ignorant of what you're doing may become concerned.

Why you're doing useless cleanses is another issue. Here's some verbiage about that.

"Detox" is short for detoxification and detoxification is a natural process involving your liver and kidneys and there is nothing you can do to effect it. It is impossible to detoxify a human once the toxin is in the blood with the possible exception of kidney dialysis to support the kidney's natural activity. Currently "detox" is a faddist word, relatively meaningless, and is used to express that which the users cannot otherwise express because of ignorance of because the expression would be patently false.

Detox diets, cleanses, and supplements don't work. There is no diet which will cause your body to get rid of toxins, heavy metals, poisonous by-products from smoking, drugs, etc. And cleanses for the purpose of weight loss don't work because they can only eliminate water and small amounts of waste which the body will replace very quickly.

Here's what the experts have to say about cleanses.

So, you can cleanse for 2 days with no problem (apparently). Old people like me do it prior to colonoscopies as a matter of routine. However, we do it under the instruction of medical professionals. Faddist or people who cleanse for cultural or religious reasons or others who don't know it's a useless thing to do, don't do it with medical advice and consent so they could be jeopardizing their health. There are people with medical issues who should not cleanse...insulin dependent diabetics, hypoglycemics, and others would find cleanses are counter to their health maintenance.

      Good luck and good health!!

  33. QUESTION:
What should I eat while I cleanse my colon ?
most information found on the internet explains the need for colon cleansing but doesn't advise you on a good dietry plan during that process.

    • ANSWER:
High fiber foods like green leafy veggies.
Are you going in for a colonoscopy or something...because most people don't just clean their colon for the heck of it.
If so, know that the examiner will give you a bowel evacuant prior to the procedure and he will have you NPO (no food) for at least 8 hours.

    • ANSWER:
You should go to a oncologist and have a colonoscopy to see what's going on.In the meantime quit eating sugar and meat.Start feeling better by eating better.Try the acidalkaline diet to get your body back on the right track.

  35. QUESTION:
how does herbal colon cleanse help?
What are the advantages of herbal colon cleanse, How does it help in skin purification. Does it have any side effects.

    • ANSWER:
It's a waste of money and discomfort. The very idea of "cleansing" the colon is ludicrous. You need bacteria in the colon to assist with the fermentation of substances, and the colon absorbs water and vitamins and potassium and forms stool. The only reason to ever clean out the colon would be to assist with imaging, such as during a colonoscopy to check for cancerous growths.

  36. QUESTION:
Is a colon cleanse considered as natural remedies or medical remedies?

    • ANSWER:
This term is used in Natural and Medical professions. Most of the time a colon cleanse is prescribed prior to a colonoscopy. It is prescribed by Herbalist if the system is acting sluggish and bowels are not regular, energy is minimal and stomach problems persist, however they also give something for the systems support to replace good nutrients and keep it hydrated. As an herbalist, I recommend this only if those conditions present themselves or as a regular routine, twice per year, usually winter and summer or spring and fall. Think about it, your eating habits in the summer are very different than those in the winter and so on and so on.

  37. QUESTION:
does all the electolyte liquid have to be consumed for a colonoscopy?
I am preping for a colonoscopy and have to drink this electolyte stuff but I can not drink more than half the container I'm wondering if that will be enough to cleanse my system.

    • ANSWER:
I anesthetize people for colonoscopies and have seen thousands of them.

If you don't follow the directions, you risk having an inadequate prep. That makes everything you did worthless. The doc will not be able to adequately check for small polyps, and you'll have to have the procedure repeated sooner. (Big cancers will still be seen, but hopefully, that won't happen!)

The best thing about colonoscopies is that polyps the size of a pin head can be removed. They are way too small to be cancerous at that size. If your colon is full of stool, it coats the walls and the tiny polyps will be missed.

Your GI doc should have given you backup instructions on what to do if you can't stomach the prep. (Usually, a bottle or two of magnesium citrate).

Also, DRINK, DRINK, DRINK water as long as you're allowed to. Many of my patients come in dehydrated, and it makes starting the iv tough, and makes passing the scope difficult for the GI guy (too much friction - ow)

Good luck. Hope your study is totally normal!

  38. QUESTION:
What types of food can I eat 2 days before the Colonoscopy?
I really need to know if I am allowed to have misso soup...
I am going to have a colonoscopy on tuesday and I stopped having any solid foods by today....
what else can I eat other than jello, clear juice and Popsicle?

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
The colon must be thoroughly cleansed before performing colonoscopy. Consequently, for two or more days before the procedure, considerable preparation is necessary to clear the colon of all stool. The patient is asked to refrain from eating any solid food for 24–48 hours before the test. Only clear liquid such as juices, broth, and gelatin are allowed. Red or purple juices should be avoided, since they can cause coloring of the colon that may be misinterpreted during the colonoscopy. The patient is advised to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. A day or two before the colonoscopy, the patient is prescribed liquid, tablet, and/or suppository laxatives by the physician. In addition, commercial enemas may be prescribed. The patient is given specific instructions on how and when to use the laxatives and/or enemas.

On the morning of the colonoscopy, the patient is not to eat or drink anything. Unless otherwise instructed by the physician, the patient should continue to take all current medications. However, vitamins with iron, iron supplements, or iron preparations should be discontinued for a few weeks prior to the colonoscopy because iron residue in the colon can inhibit viewing during the procedure. These preparatory procedures are extremely important to ensure a thoroughly clean colon for examination.

  39. QUESTION:
Whats the best colon cleanse product?
Whats the best colon cleanse product?

    • ANSWER:
The notion that your colon needs cleansing is a triumph of marketing. There have been clinical studies, but none produced results backing the claims of colon cleansing products, including that your cravings are reduced.

Fecal material does not collect, impacted on the colon walls. Fecal material in the colon is not toxic and cannot poison. (Or constipated people would be found dead on the street. "Look, Jerry, there's another one. Poor bastard didn't eat enough fiber.")

  40. QUESTION:
Planning on doing a colon cleanse?
I am already a very good eater, no soda, no fast food, eat lots of things organic, fruits, vegetables, I don't eat beef or pork, get a lot of fiber etc. But lately I've been feeling clogged and I want to cleanse my colon.

What are good products for this that I can find at the grocery store?

And for those of you who have done colon cleansing, what was the outcome?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,

If you decide to cleanse your colon with a product, a great colon cleansing and parasite detoxification program can be purchased at DrNatura called Colonix http://www.drnatura.com

The Colonix colon cleanse will definitely clean out old debris from your colon and you will feel so much better because of this, as that was clearly the case for me.

I believe their Colonix colon cleanse and parasite ridding product is the best in the world. I will be espousing the merits of this product my entire life, as it literally gave me a new lease on life http://www.healthbanquet.com/colon-cleanse.html

Enemas have been practiced for thousands of years as a way to help heal the body. Even Jesus Christ spoke of the importance of enemas for ridding the colon of worms. "And the devils left their bowels in the shape of multitudinous worms which writhed in impotent rage after the angel of water had cast them out of the bowels of the Sons of Men."

"Wow, worms in the colon!" you say. Absolutely. In fact, if you have a hard time believing this, please view this colonoscopy video of a live human wriggling tapeworm and roundworm in the colon http://www.healthbanquet.com/parasites-roundworm-tapeworm.html

My good friend passed a thirteen inch worm while doing the Colonix cleanse. She did not experience any health symptoms that would lead her to believe she was harboring a worm. Definitely, better out than in!

There are many products on the market, and I urge you to really do your research. If you use a cheaper product, most likely you will not get near the benefit to your body that Colonix intestinal cleanse can accomplish.

I especially like DrNatura because they have wonderful customer service available 7 days a week. Yes, you can reach them by phone with any questions you have. Their product specialists are very kind in answering any of your questions. I called many times and was always pleased with how they addressed my questions.

Remember the saying, "Death Begins In The Colon." That is so true. Sometimes mother nature just needs a little help "cleaning house."

Any time you spend learning the major importance of your intestines, and then learning what you can do to enhance its function, will serve your well.

  41. QUESTION:
What do you call the short-term cleanse diets, usually about a week long?
A lot of celebrities usually go on extreme diets a week before a big event, like actresses before the oscars this week or models before a show. What are these called and what are the most effective ones?
I'm doing this for a very large event I have to go to in the next week (I just found out today that I'm going). I normally eat very healthy, but I know people who will drastically drop their calorie intake or have some special diet they follow a few days before a big event. I know it's not necessarily "healthy" but consider how well I eat all the time, I don't feel too bad about doing this to my body once. I don't plan on making it a regular thing, or keeping this weight off for good. I'm currently 5'7 and 128ibs, not to bad in my opinion but it'd be nice to cut off just that little bit for this event :)

    • ANSWER:
I think your premise is wrong and following celebrities is not the way to be fit and healthy. Follow doctors and scientists instead.

There's a difference between a diet and a "cleanse". They are not the same thing so don't get confused. A diet can hlep you lose fat when done properly. A cleanse can't help you do anything except purge your GI tract as a prep for a colonoscopy or surgical procedure.

"Detox" is short for detoxification and detoxification is a natural process involving your liver and kidneys and there is nothing you can do to effect it. It is impossible to detoxify a human once the toxin is in the blood with the possible exception of kidney dialysis, kelation therapy, and other expensive medical modalities. Your body cleanses itself naturally. And cleanses, purges, emetics, enemas, alternative and homeopathic colon cleanses etc. cannot remove fat from your body or make your body lose fat and/or toxins. If fat is your problem, you're eventually going to realize that nothing works except a proper diet for life or surgery. The best diet for all normal adults hasn't changed. It is still a varied, balanced, nutritious, and properly apportioned diet of high quality foods.

Detoxification is a fad and a fantasy only. If you have reason to believe you're toxic, consult with your doctor. Don't waste your time paying attention to advertising hype, naturopathic gurus, homeopathic charlatans, etc. The road to good health is paved with science. If you or someone you love gets deathly ill, you will take them to a place where medical science is practiced. So, where is the sense in abandoning medical science in favor of baseless and unscientific methods of quacks and charlatans.

      Good luck and good health!!

  42. QUESTION:
what is the best colon cleanser free trial?
there are so many colon cleanser free trial around.which is the best?

    • ANSWER:
Save your money, forget the colon cleansers. Undigested food does NOT build up in your colon, no matter what anybody tells you. I've had a colonoscopy (in my 60s) and watched the pictures as the little camera went through my colon. Nothing in there except shiny pink colon walls. No gunk whatsoever, no undigested steaks from 1990. The whole colon cleanse thing is a scam.

  43. QUESTION:
The supplement/colon cleansing program Evercleanse - do you do all 3 steps together?
Or do you do the Replenish for 10 days, then the Cleansing formula for 10 days, then the colon health formula for 10 days?
-Thanks red hedd, unfortunately your answer didn't answer my question whatsoever... please respond on if you're actually going to answer my question and not lecture. THANKS!

    • ANSWER:
You do know that the colon cleanse, doesn't do anything for your overall health. Stick to a colonoscopy when your doctor calls for it, and don't use Colon Blow without a real need.

  44. QUESTION:
Has anyone tried intensive colon cleanse by digestive science?
Is this stuff a hoax? Or does it really work?

    • ANSWER:
Gastroenterologists (real doctors) repeatedly state this "mucoid plague" promoted by non medical practitioners does not exist.
The digestive system is one of the largest contributors to our immune system health.
Spend your money in the produce department to speed your cleanse.
      Good luck and good health.

Have you done a colon and intestine cleanse before?
How do I do one and what is it like? Do you feel any different?
What is the name of the product doctors give patients before they have a colonoscopy that flushes everything out?

    • ANSWER:
I had a colonoscopy and everything was cleaned out. I felt no difference what so ever. I had no more energy after the colonoscopy than before. There are over the counter products you can use at the pharmacy that will clean you out. Just ask the pharmacist he/she can recommend the products you need.

Colon cleansing: Is it helpful or harmful?
I've read many negative things about colon cleansing, but I don't believe any of them. Colon cleansing generally sounds like a good way to clear toxins from your body. What do you think?
      Answer
      from Michael Picco, M.D.

Proponents of colon cleansing believe that toxins from your gastrointestinal tract can cause a variety of health problems, such as arthritis, allergies and asthma. They say that colon cleansing — also called colonic irrigation — removes these toxins, thus promoting healthy intestinal bacteria, boosting your energy and enhancing your immune system.

While there is little scientific evidence to support or refute the benefits of colon cleansing, critics say it's generally unnecessary and at times may even be harmful.

One concern with colon cleansing is that it can increase your risk of dehydration. A potentially more serious concern is that certain laxatives used in colon cleansing, such as those with sodium phosphate, can cause a rise in your electrolytes, which can be dangerous if you have kidney disease or heart disease.

If you choose to do colon cleansing, be sure to take these simple precautions:

      * Check with your conventional medical providers first, especially if you take any medications or have any health problems.
      * Make sure your colon-cleansing practitioner uses disposable equipment that hasn't been previously used.
      * Get a list of specific herbal ingredients and amounts in any colon-cleansing products you use — some herbal supplements can cause health problems.
      * Beware of broad or inflated claims that colon cleansing will cure an illness or improve your health.
      * Stay well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids while undergoing colon cleansing to prevent dehydration.

If you are considering colon cleansing because of constipation, consider trying these steps first to relieve constipation:

      * Drink plenty of fluids, including water
      * Eat a diet rich in fiber
      * Get regular exercise

  50. QUESTION:
    Colon cleansing and colonoscopy prep?
Is prepping for a colonoscopy the same thing as colon cleansing? Can I use the same solutions to cleanse as I do to prep? It would be much easier to obtain and it seemingly would work much faster. Logic would say that the prep for a colonoscopy would completely clean out the colon just as a colon cleanse. So why is this apparently not the case with so many new colon cleansers that are hard to get and extremely expensive compared to the simple colonoscopy prep?

    • ANSWER:
You are right in that colonoscopy prep would do the job.

The reason the "colon cleansers" are expensive is that colon cleansing is bull$h1t. It is a total racket. There is absolutely no reason to clean out your colon if you are not going to have an expensive camera take pictures of it, or an expensive doctor snip off some polyps that may be pre-cancerous.

Here is a quote from the article below:

"No scientific evidence supports the alleged benefits of colon cleansing. The bowel itself is not dirty and barring drugs, disease or mechanical blockage, cleans itself naturally without assistance. Certain enema preparations have been associated with heart attacks and electrolyte imbalances, and improperly prepared or used equipment can cause infection or damage to the bowel. Frequent colon cleansing can lead to dependence on enemas to defecate and some herbs may reduce the effectiveness of prescription drugs."

Conclusion: Leave your bowels alone, eat a good diet that is high in fiber, drink lots of water, and be thankful you are not wearing a colostomy bag.
