How To Detox Liver

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Legitimate ways to detox / heal a fatty liver?
I've been diagnosed with a fatty or marbled liver with mild infiltration. Now, the Doc says "eat better and exercise" but won't give any details. Friends advise pills and patches to help detox the liver but none of those items have been proven to really work. So. Diet and exercise? What kind? Foods, liquids? Already off the alcohol that contributed to this but I need a game plan rather than doing something that, while healthy, doesn't contribute to healing.

    • ANSWER:
There is nothing you can do or take to detox a liver or "clean" it as many people think they can do. You change or heal a fatty liver by eating a healthy diet without a lot of fatty foods, avoiding alcohol, and avoiding medications that harm the liver. If you were drinking enough alcohol to cause it to become fatty, then wait awhile and see if there is an improvement in a few months. That most likely was the real culprit of your fatty liver if you were drinking quite a bit. It's a matter of changing your lifestyle and getting rid of bad habits. That is what will help it.

  2. QUESTION:
How to detox liver in a natural way?
I've been reading some stuff about natural products that can help to detoxify your liver, anyone know anything about this or know where I can find out more?

    • ANSWER:
The best (and easiest and cheapest!) thing you can do is to eat a diet of at least 75% raw foods. (Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fresh juices, lots of filtered water.)

Keep the colon clean to facilitate toxin elimination from the liver: Eating plenty of raw fibrous vegetables, like carrots, celery and cauliflower, will sweep out your colon nicely.

Foods high in Vitamin K (leafy greens, alfalfa sprouts) are especially beneficial.

Eat plenty of raw almonds, Brazil nuts, coconut, walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds. These contain arginine, an amino acid which helps to detoxify ammonia, a by-product of protein digestion which accumulates in the liver.

  3. QUESTION:
How can i detoxify/decongest my liver naturally for clearer skin and overall well being?
I was told that if i detox/decongest my liver that i'll have clearer skin because the skin is a major outlet of everything else that is going on in your body.Right now i'm doing a colon cleanse kit.I just started. Will this interfere with naturally cleansing my liver or can i continue to take them?So how can i naturally detoxify my liver for clearer skin and overall well being?

    • ANSWER:
I'm sorry to be a downer, but the alternative medicine claims that your body needs "detox" are false. Your liver is incredibly efficient at removing things that shouldn't be there. You don't need anything special to remove things.

Drink lots of water. You don't need to drink aloe juice, and colon cleansing can be dangerous to the bacterial flora in your intestines. I wouldn't recommend it.

You should see a dermatologist if you want to help clear your skin up. I went through about 15 prescription medicines that did nothing until I got Accutane, which worked perfectly. Each person is a little different.

  5. QUESTION:
How long can you take herbs for homeopathy/holistic use?
I have heard certain herbs like Echinacea should only be taken a few months before cold/flu season starts and not everyday all year-round, or otherwise, they are not as effective, as you build up some sort of immunity to its effectiveness.

Is this true for most herbs? Or are there other herbs that can be taken all the time - like Ginseng, Garlic, etc. as a daily supplement for overall health or Milk Thistle/Dandelion to cleanse/detox the liver?

While I am familiar with all of the benefits of herbs, and know about shelf-life, expiration dates, know that the FDA does not approve certain herbs, etc., I am still unclear about long-term use/effects. Can someone please clarify any known long-term use adverse affects of any known herbs?

Thank you in advance for your help/information.

    • ANSWER:
as a trained chinese herbalist i can ell you that yes, there are absolutely some herbs that you should not take for extended periods of time.

garlic is fine on a daily basis, and is nearly impossible to overdose on (unless you're a vampire or planning on breathing on anyone ;)

ginseng on the other hand is a tonic, and is designed for long term use IF (i stress if) you are of deficient constitution! it can have detrimental side effects if taken long term or in doses that are too large (insomnia, sweating, anxiety...). a trained chinese herbalist can tell you whether or not you are of a constitution to use/need ginseng.

liver detox herbs such as milk thistle or dandelion also need to be dosed correctly, as too much at once can lead to nausea, headaches etc (especially if you aren't used to cleanses.) as for use over time, cleansing herbs should be used seasonally, typically in the spring, and avoided at other times unless warranted by something like a surgery (anesthesia), food poisoning, etc. too much cleansing can over-stress the body and end up draining your energy instead of increasing it.

there are a number of other herbs that are sold otc and each herb has different contraindications etc. my advice to you would be to consult with an herbalist before considering taking anything or if you have any questions/concerns.

      hope that helps!

  6. QUESTION:
Why do I get rashes after drinking some wine?
I've been getting rashes over my body, hands, legs when I drink certain amount (just a cup or two) of alcohol/wine.. I heard that it is because my liver is not clean. Some said if I drink more, these rashes will go away. If that is not true, how to detox my liver?

    • ANSWER:
I agree that you are likely reacting to sulphites, and/or the fact that wine contains histamines, which cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction within the body.

Do not take anti-histamines (i.e. Benadryl) with alcohol, you should avoid wine completely.

Yes, you should avoid wine completely, but if you inadvertently find some in your food (i.e. sauces), be on the lookout for more serious symptoms. If you develop trouble breathing, swelling of your lips, tongue, or throat, or feel faint (low blood pressure), consider a serious reaction and/or anaphylaxis, call 911 and and head to the ER. You may want to look into formal allergy testing, in the case you may need to carry an epi-pen with you at all time.

Although your reaction does not sound severe, food allergies always carry the risk that they can result in a severe reaction. Sulphites, although not as commonly as peanuts or shellfish, can cause serious allergic reactions.

  7. QUESTION:
Lowring Cholesterol with a Glass of water and a lemon?
My doctor wants me to lower my cholesterol and someone in a health food shop said, that I should add half a lemon to a glass of water, to detox my liver. And I'd have to keep taking that.

    How much dose this help.

I mostly drink water, very realy do I drink anything else. And its only a few snacks, that I have had to start cutting back on.

    • ANSWER:
Read 'The Great Cholesterol Con,' by Dr Malcolm Kendrick.
Then talk to me about cholesterol.

  8. QUESTION:
What is the best way to detox your liver?
I have been on a bit of a bender lately...way too much drinking. I want to cleanse my body and start the New Year fresh. Can anyone recommend a good detox?

    • ANSWER:
You can't detox your body. You also will metabolize the alcohol quickly so there's nothing in your liver to detox from your "bender". You have done the damage and it can't be fixed. Just lay off the alcohol for the rest of your life if you want to have a healthy liver at 50.

"Detox" is short for detoxification and detoxification is a natural process involving your liver and kidneys and there is nothing you can do to effect it. It is impossible to detoxify a human once the toxin is in the blood with the possible exception of kidney dialysis, kelation therapy, and other expensive medical modalities. Currently "detox" is a faddist word, relatively meaningless, and is used to express that which the users cannot otherwise express because of ignorance of because the expression would be patently false.

Detox diets, cleanses, and supplements don't work. There is no diet which will cause your body to get rid of toxins, heavy metals, poisonous by-products from smoking, drugs, etc. And cleanses for the purpose of weight loss don't work because they can only eliminate water and small amounts of waste which the body will replace very quickly.

Check out these reliable references. Listen to experts, not a random bunch of strangers of unknown credibility in this and other forums. Here's what the experts have to say about cleanses.

Your body cleanses itself naturally. And cleanses, purges, emetics, enemas, alternative and homeopathic colon cleanses etc. cannot remove fat from your body or make your body lose fat and/or toxins. If fat is your problem, you're eventually going to realize that nothing works except a proper diet for life or surgery. The best diet for all normal adults hasn't changed. It is still a varied, balanced, nutritious, and properly apportioned diet of high quality foods.

Detoxification is a fad and a fantasy only. If you have reason to believe you're toxic, consult with your doctor. Don't waste your time paying attention to advertising hype, naturopathic gurus, homeopathic charlatans, etc. The road to good health is paved with science. If you or someone you love gets deathly ill, you will take them to a place where medical science is practiced. So, where is the sense in abandoning medical science in favor of baseless and unscientific methods of quacks and charlatans.

      Good luck and good health!!

  9. QUESTION:
Can someone give me a website or recipe for a liver detox?
Is it crucial to do a colon and kidney detox before undergoing the liver detox? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It isn't crucial to detox at all.
The idea of detoxifying or purifying the body of harmful substances has been around for centuries and cycles back into popularity now and again.

We are not full of toxins, the body and the colon are self cleansing.
season”, health specialists say that people’s drive to purge their bodies of toxins can, in fact, be harmful.

Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital in southwest London, said she saw dozens of patients suffering side-effects ranging from bowel problems to potassium depletion. “There is a fixation with the notion that we can detoxify the body through what we eat and drink, but the whole idea has no scientific basis,” said Dr Collins.

  10. QUESTION:
Is it ok to take Spirulina and Milk Thistle together?
I want to detox my liver as my doctor tells me i have a higher than normal bilirubin level.

    • ANSWER:
Milk thistle is for regeneration of the liver
Spirulina is a good souce of protein and helps to keep you in a good alkaline ph

Liquid Chlorophyll is a better nutrient for cleansing the liver and cleaning of the blood.

You might consider thiotic acid for elevated liver enzymes
Go to ecological formulas on line.

  11. QUESTION:
How do I know if Liver Detox is working?
I am on day three (seven days total) of drinking a Liver Detox Tea, should I have any signs/symptoms that the detox tea is working?
I have had acne prone skin for 15 years and I decided to finally try a more natural approach since nothing else has worked. I am going to do a "Skin Detox Tea" but the naturalist recommended doing a Liver Detox Tea first.

    • ANSWER:
Why do you need to detox your liver? If you have done something to harm it or have hepatitis, the detoxification should be relieving symptoms. You probably should talk to a Doctor before worrying too much about liver detoxification, unless you already have been diagnosed with liver failure or damage.

  12. QUESTION:
How can i detox and cleanse my liver?
What are some natural and low cost ways to detox and cleanse my liver?

    • ANSWER:
The healthy way is to have a healthy lifestyle.
Adopt a healthy balanced eating plan, with a variety of fruits, vegetables, wholegrain, lean protein, healthy fats & low-fat dairy.
Drink adequate water, keep the not-so-healthy foods to small portion sizes & don't over-indulge with alcohol.

  13. QUESTION:
What is the best liver detox for someone with HCV x 20 years?
I'd like to know if there's a way to rid my liver of the effects of alcohol when I go out and have a few drinks.

    • ANSWER:
The medi-nerds are out in force I see here promoting their ignorance of detoxing. "Beware of detox scams?" Beware of ANTI-DETOX people. A liver gallbladder flush works wonders for the body and I have lots of people that I have helped with doing this type of cleanse. To say you can't detox the body is so ridiculous and only showing great ignorance.

John Hopkins researchers found intrahepatic gallstones in livers that are causing lots of problems for people. Typical medical diagnostics do not show these stones because they look like ordinary bile when using these tests. Autopsies were used to examine livers, etc. in the studies done by John Hopkins researchers. To remove these stones and gallstones is a very popular DETOXING flush that does remove the stones. I'm always anxious to hear from patients I put on this form of detoxing because the amount of stones that come out and the sizes are always shocking to these people. What I find is that many of these people take jars of their stones to show their doctors that lied to them, telling them detoxing does not work.

It takes several flushes to totally clean these organs, but the results are incredible. The skin becomes vibrant, the liver starts cleansing the blood better, producing better bile and all the health benefits are marvelous.

To prevent the problems with alcohol on the liver, you can take digestive enzymes that include all the pancreatic enzymes before drinking. You will not get a hangover the next day. Also, go to the health food store and purchase some prickly pear herbs and take those before going out.

A little alcohol will not hurt the average person, but excessive drinking will damage the liver and cause a huge build up of the intrahepatic gallstones that crate fatty livers.

The milk thistle herb will only have a very minor effect on the health of the liver, but it certainly won't hurt it either. Just don't expect great results from taking it.

      good luck to you

  14. QUESTION:
what is the best way of detoxing our liver?
what is the best way to detox our liver?

    • ANSWER:
Can be achieved artificially by techniques such as dialysis and (in a very limited number of cases) chelation therapy.

Other less mainstream methods for eliminating toxic substances from the body include the modification of the diet and addition of certain herbs and rituals such as colonic irrigation, juice fasting and sweat lodges. All these methods claim to assist the body's natural detoxification process.

A detox diet is a dietary regimen involving a change in consumption habits in an attempt to detoxify the body by removal of toxins or other contaminants. It is claimed to improve health, energy, resistance to disease, mental state, digestion, as well as aiding in weight loss.

Various methods of modifying the diet for the said purpose of detoxification include:

Fasting, including water fasting and juice fasting.
Increased consumption of fish such as salmon
      Food combining.
      Caloric restriction.
Herbal detox (if one considers herbs food and not a form of drug).

Detox diets usually suggest that fruits and vegetables compose a majority of one's food intake. Limiting this to unprocessed (and sometimes also non-GM) foods is often advocated. Limiting or eliminating alcohol is also a major factor, and drinking more water (which helps curb appetite) is similarly recommended.

  15. QUESTION:

    Thanks for your help!

    • ANSWER:
Yes, herbal liver detox tea absolutely works! Try the ones from Yogi tea. YOu can get them from local drug stores.

Additionally, you should follow proper acne skin care and follow healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

  16. QUESTION:
Can you drink water during the lemon detox diet?
I am going to try the lemon detox diet, and I know it says you can't eat, but can I drink water?

    • ANSWER:
Our bodies contain the #1 tools essential to cleanse and detox. A liver and a pair of kidneys.
The only and easiest way to cleanse and detox is to stop putting all the chemicals, additives and concentrates from a diet of processed and refined foods in our daily diet.
Most drugs, alcohol, and food chemicals exit the body through normal processing and filtering by the liver and kidneys over a period of 3 to 4 days.
A healthy diet of whole fresh foods is the key to "cleansing" and "detoxing".
There is no miracle diet or product that will accelerate the process.
Our bodies are designed starting with the teeth to consume whole solid foods. The stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, intestines, and colon are all designed to work with solid foods, not highly concentrated juices. That is why we have teeth instead of blender blades in our mouths.
Both soluble and insoluble fiber are part of a healthy diet. Juicing substantially reduces the value and effectiveness of insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber keeps the nutrients and toxic cellular waste dumped back into the lower small intestine moving through the digestive tract. This reduces the amount of time waste spends in the body and lowers toxicity.
While juicing concentrates nutrients, it also concentrates natural sugars in fruits. Liquids are absorbed much quicker in the small intestines resulting in spiking of blood sugar and insulin levels in the blood.
WIthout complex carbohydrates and large insoluble fibers in the digestive system to extend and slow the absorption process, insulin spikes occur too often. A simple example is giving a diabetic with low blood sugar a glass of juice. It enters the bloodstream quickly. Constant insulin spikes increase appetite stimulation. So you can end up drinking even more juice. The problem with any fast or cleanse is things will change when it ends.
A healthy life diet of whole fresh foods including lean meats, eggs, fish, dairy, whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables are the keys to health, proper weight, and overall wellness. Avoid as much processed and refined food as possible.
Long I know but it is important to point out the change to a clean diet is the key yet we readily give the credit to the pill, potion, diet pill, detox, cleanse, or fad diet.
      Good luck and good health.

  17. QUESTION:
How to Perform A Successful Liver Detox?
I would like to know how to cleanse my liver, whether the remedies are a certain food, over-the-counter medicines, or a combination of the both. I feel tired and sluggish all of the time now and I believe it may be a result of toxins in my liver. If anyone has an answer I'd really appreciate it.

    • ANSWER:
Go on a green juice diet. It will detox every cell in your body.

  18. QUESTION:
Liver and Gallbladder flush:What time of the next day should the stones be passed?
Has anybody done the grapefruit and olive oil liver flush? I did it last night (followed by two cups of Epsom Salt this morning at 6 and 8 am). I have had many bowl movements from morning and still no stones passed (it is noon now). Some thing wrong? When are they supposed to pass? I also don't feel tired or nausea.

    • ANSWER:
You should have noticed some, especially little white balls of chaff, but it's not wrong. Either you're healthy or very clogged up. You may need to do a detox diet for a week or so before doing another flush - a juice fast is the most effective; fresh, not from a carton - and then repeat the flush every two or three weeks. Detoxing is a process, not a one-off quick fix.

I didn't feel tired, nauseous or much different the next day and I've done 5 of these now, so don't worry too much about "should bes".

  19. QUESTION:
What is the best way to remove toxins from your liver?
I am trying to loose weight and I read in a book that is a good idea to rid your liver of toxins prior to going on a diet.

    • ANSWER:
Well, there are several natural herbs and supplements that help to cleanse and detox the liver. Some of the most popular ones are Milk Thistle, Dandelion, Yellowdock, Burdock, Alpha Lipoic Acid, TMG (Trimethylglycine), Spanish Black Radish, Cysteine Peptide, Goji, and even some of the B vitamins. You can try basically any combination of these for benefits to the liver. Good luck!

  20. QUESTION:
What is a liver cleanse that you have actually used?
A doctor told me I need to do a liver cleanse. Is there one that you have actually used? How long did it take? Did you have to be close to a bathroom for more than 24 hours? I have a few weeks to figure out how to do this until I see him again.
Oh, the doctor didn't say to just do one right away. It has to wait a few more weeks. I just want to know what to expect, thanks.

    • ANSWER:
At Shoppers Drug Mart (Canadian) I did a detox of the liver colon and kidneys called triotox. its a 100% herbal cleanse and it was really easy -3 pills 3 x a day for 14 days with food and a multi vitamin. I could really feel the benefit right away. You will feel slightly sick for a while but that is because your body is adjusting to the cleanse. Drink about 8-10 glasses of water a day while on it or the cleanse will not work so great. Also I found herbal tyea to be stimuolating. I went to the bathroom a slight bit more than usual but it wasnt so bad. just one or 2 extra trips in the night.

      Good luck.

  21. QUESTION:
What is the best and most natural method for a detox?
I am doing some research on detox and various ways of going about it. I am looking for natural, organic methods of detox. My questions are, have you detoxed before? How long is the process? What does it do exactly? What are the outcomes? Do you think it's healthy and how often should it be done?

    • ANSWER:
A herb called milkthistle is a natural way to clean out toxins from your liver, etc & it's a gentle way to do it. I used a product called Legalon I think, which was basically milkthistle in tablet form. I guess maybe doing this once or twice a year until the box or bottle is finished.

I've also tried the drastic product called Colozone. It's very high in magnesium & you take it every night for 7 days & it flushes out your system just like a colonic. It's pretty drastic though, like every morning you have to run to the toilet because it all comes out like liquid diarrhea! It sure did work for cleaning out your system (you should only do this once per year) but it was quite an experience.

Also psyillium husks are good for intestinal cleansing. It's a powder you put in orange juice & drink everyday, it's basically a gentle fibre & very good for your system, particularly if you tend to not have muesli or anything like that for breakfast. It basically just keeps you having a regular daily bowel movement. It's also very inexpensive & you can get it at your health store. Doctors often recommend it for people who don't consume enough fibre in their diet & maybe get constipated sometimes or aren't having a bowel movement every day.

A product called HMD heavy metal detox is the best on the market for using if you think you are overloaded with chemicals from things like hair dye you've been using or maybe you've been doing something around chemicals like painting your house or something. It's quite expensive though & not worth it unless you think you're sensitive to chemicals. Also anti perspirants are bad re the chemicals they release into your body (like aluminium cholorhydrate) & you should only use ones with natural ingredients (although it can be a search to find one that actually stops the smell of sweat - I've only managed to find one - it's called Spring Fresh deoderant by Natures Gate in California). Try googling it to buy online if it's not available locally.

How do I know all this? Trial & error & my naturopath has recommended all this to me & she knows all the good brands (as some are bad quality). So there you go, I've spend a few hundred dollars at my naturopath to find all this out & now you have the same info for free!

  22. QUESTION:
How long does it take your liver to detox?
I've been unhealthy for a while now. I eat fast food, take sleep aids, and drink alcohol on a regular basis.
Bottom line, my liver isn't in peak condition.

My question is how long does it take the liver to naturally cleanse itself? Does the length of an unhealthy lifestyle complicate the process?

    • ANSWER:
You've been sucked into a bunch of garbage pseudoscience. Your liver is constantly detoxifying the substances you put into it. Within a few hours of consuming alcohol, your liver has broken it down to harmless compounds and prepared it for excretion from the body.
Stop thinking in terms of "cleansing" the body. You've been abusing your body with this disgusting lifestyle, but that doesn't mean that you're "dirty," only that your body is overworked and run-down.

  23. QUESTION:
What is the life expectancy of a patient with alcoholic liver cirrhosis?
My father is 55 yrs old. 1 year ago he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. His billirubin was 22 mg/dl. He had ascitis. But he undergone treatment and now.. after that his billirubin remains between 4 to 5 mg/dl. He had his bend surgery for varices. His ALT and AST are normal. Can anyone specify what is the life expectancy? Because he is very depressed about this.

    • ANSWER:
This is something that his doctor will have to answer since no one could answer this question without knowing the amount of liver damage he has right now. How badly scarred is his liver? That will determine his prognosis for the future. It's good that his numbers have improved quite a bit which means that the damage probably will at least slow down. Once the cirrhosis reaches the more advanced stage, then nothing stops it from progressing to total liver failure no matter what the person does. If caught in the earlier stage, then the person may be able to slow it down or even stop it completely from progressing to total failure. He must absolutely never drink alcohol again no matter what and he has to avoid any medications that can harm his liver. His age doesn't matter. It's the amount of damage that gives you the answer to this question.

If your father had ascites from his cirrhosis, then his disease is most likely in the more advanced stage because this is a symptom of liver failure and it usually doesn't show up until the disease is advanced. But you never know what might happen if he has stopped drinking. He could greatly improve. There is no cure for cirrhosis other than a transplant, but not everyone with cirrhosis will need a transplant depending on the amount of damage and whether or not they can stop the progression. All this can only be answered by his doctor who sees all his tests results and has the experience and education to give an answer. If you father continues to drink alcohol and has cirrhosis, that is a sure death sentence in time.

Even though it's difficult, it's possible for some alcoholics to receive a transplant if they need one to stay alive. There are extra requirements for them and they must pass an evaluation at a transplant center who will determine whether or not they can qualify, but it is possible. So not all hope is lost even if your father does need a new liver. The first requirement they have for alcoholics is 6 months of detox (sobriety) before they will begin to consider them for one. Your fathers doctor should refer your father to a transplant clinic if his liver is so badly damaged that he will need a transplant. If your father is an active drinker, then there is no hope of getting a new liver. That's immediate disqualification. The alcoholic must understand that they will never be able to drink any alcohol for the rest of their life if they want a transplant.

  24. QUESTION:
Is there a way to heal and detox your liver?
I recently have been injured and was prescribed Vicodin for pain. I took those for about a week and a half. I now know that all the Tylenol in the Vicodin doesn't do much good to my liver. Is there a way to know if I did any serious damage to my liver? Any signs? Also if I did are there any remedies that will heal and detox it? Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
I rarely answer seriously, but I will for this one. Milk Thistle is great. Aloe Vera juice. And yes, coffee, two to three cups a day. Make sure you follow the directions on the milk thistle. Good luck.

  25. QUESTION:
What is the best detox to kick off a health kick?
I am wanting to do a weekend to a week length detox to start a health kick because i am feeling quite 'blegh' lately with eating rubbish. Does anyone has any suggestions that don't cost the earth with ingredients etc?? Has anyone had weightless success on one??

    • ANSWER:
Planning to undergo detox will not require you much time and effort to do. You can simply do it only at home. To give you an idea, liver, skin and your intestines play big roles in detoxification process. So you need to think ways on how to make them healthy. Provided the question that you have posted, here are some tips you can use to make your body healthy and detoxify the wastes successfully.

1.Increase your water intake with at least 8 glasses up to 2 liters a day.
2.Avoid drinking alcoholic drinks or reduce it into moderate amount if you can’t avoid it.
3.Keep away from franchised foods or canned goods.
4.Eat green leafy vegetables and 2 varieties of fresh fruits at least twice or thrice a day.
5.Take appropriate and enough time of rest to avoid stress.
6.Do simple exercise like breathing, walking or walking up and down the stairs. This would allow you skin to reopen and a chance to flush out any toxic materials through your skin.
7.Take shower and make bowel movement regularly.

With these basic and simple ways, you would be able to make it and successful detox yourself. No need for big amount of money, just self-discipline

  26. QUESTION:
What exactly occurs when the liver is inflamed?
A patient is told his liver has become inflamed because of his heavy drinking and that if he continues to drink, his liver will shut down.

Lets say he never drinks againl. Ever. What can happen even after he stops? What precautions can he take to help his liver?

    • ANSWER:
When alcohol is consumed, the liver takes
the alcohol and uses the cells enzymes to
convert it to acetaldehyde and then to
acetate. It is then further converted to
carbon dioxide and water that the body can
      dispose of.
If a person is sensitive to alcohol or takes
too much, the liver may become overwhelmed
and it won't go through the complete process
the way it should. It may only reach the
      acetaldehyde phase. Both alcohol and,
the breakdown acetaldehyde, can be toxic
to the liver cells and damage them.

When the cells of the liver become damaged,
the immune system of the body responds to
this and causes inflammation to develop in
the liver, which will cause the liver to enlarge
in size...even though it is surrounded by
      a tight membrane capsule.
If the alcohol is stopped and the inflammation is
treated, then the liver cells may heal.
However, if this is not done...it can advance
where the liver cells die off and scar tissue
formation takes place inside the liver that
blocks the flow of blood. This is then
known as Cirrhosis of the liver and is
irreversible. It can lead to having to
have a liver transplant that can cost in
the range of 0,000 and up.

The best step to take is to have blood testing
done asap. Simple blood tests can show
      alot:
The liver enzymes test will show if the
cells of the liver are damage.
The liver functions tests will show how
well the cells of the liver are able to do
the 500 plus functions to keep the body well.
Viral testing to see if a virus has entered
the body and is using the liver cells to replicate
      itself.

If the liver is determined to have a problem...
it is best to be referred to a gastroenterlogist
or hepatologist. If the doctor sees that
the blood tests levels are not right, he
may order an ultrasound or Ct scan to
look at the liver. They will be able
to see if the liver is enlarged, if the blood
is flowing well through the liver, and if
there may be any growths there.

The doctors are the only ones that can
determine if there is disease present and
how far advanced it is...through their test
results. The liver is very quiet about damage
being done until the liver cells are not
able to function or die off...it is important
      to be checked.

All liver patients are told not to drink any
alcohol. They should try to stay away from
others who are ill and use purell...
      stay away from open salad/food/dessert
bars where people can sneeze or cough into
them. They should only take medications
that are approved of or prescribed by their
      doctors...since medication goes through
the liver first to be broken down before
going to the rest of the body. He should
speak to the doctor about any vitamins
he may be lacking...since those who are
alcoholics tend to lack certain ones.

If they have a hard time stopping the alcohol,
the doctor has medications that can help
with the symptoms of coming off it slowly.
He may also suggest a detox program at
      the hospital.

A patient cannot be listed for a liver transplant
unless they are free of alcohol consumption
for a period of six months prior to the
evaluation. Many patients die before being
placed on it because they refuse to give it
      up.

I hope this information has been of some
      help to you.

  27. QUESTION:
How do you know when your staring to or have messed up your liver from drinking?
I was wondering when do you know or how do you know if you are staring to mess up your liver from drinking? Like are there are physical signs or symptoms to your liver getting messed up from drinking. I binge drink every now and then and was wondering if drinking say every weekend for about two months is enough to mess up your liver? When I do drink it's hard alcohol not beer.

    • ANSWER:
Some of the signs that you are drinking too much and it's affecting your liver:
Enlarged, fatty liver. You can actually feel that the liver is swollen and
larger than it used to be.
Your tolerance is lower than it used to be. As the liver is poisoned over
time, its ability to detox alcohol is decreased. This means that more
alcohol stays in your blood and you feel it faster and longer than before.
Your tolerance to other things, like medications, has changed. For the
same reasons, the liver becomes less able to detox medications quickly.
This means that a larger dose of medication will circulate in your blood
than in the past, possibly multiplying its effects.
Finally, headaches/dizziness, and other alcohol side-effects such as the
next morning hangover, are worse than they used to be.

What are some ways of detoxing my body so i can start fresh with my ideal default body? i'd like to rid myself of all the toxins, impurities, and crap that we eat daily and start over. then work out and maintain a healthy active lifestyle... but yeah, how do i detox it i guess is the question!
    thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I've been reading some stuff from this guy Jon Barron (www.jonbarron.org), anyway, he's got great info on some great detox's. The more I read from him and other places, the more I agree with what he says...anyway, juice fasts are great...this guy recommends drinking the healthiest (not bottled or canned) juice you can find, drinking 8 oz. every hour your awake for 3-7 days. I wouldn't just drink water, it will screw your metabolism up. Also, this guy talks about a colon and then later a gaul blatter/liver detox if you want to spend the money. Your body will heal quickly, so eat well and do some investigating about the best thing for YOU!

  29. QUESTION:
How long after you stop drinking does it take the liver to get back to normal?
I've been drinking a lot of wine (about a bottle per night) to help me to get to sleep and got a fright when my doc said that my liver results were a bit high. I have now stopped completely and won't start up again but was just wondering how long it will take to get better. Thanks
I was doing this for about 1 year sad to say.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on how many years you have been drinking. Your liver will detox and rebuild itself.
You can go onto justask.com ask a homeopath to prescribe a remedy to detox the liver,
give them a sense of the liver tests.Homeopathy is safe, no side effects, and it works.

  30. QUESTION:
I'm concerned about the amount of toxins in my liver?
I used to drink every day for about half a year. I've stopped now and just drinking green tea and plenty of fruit, do you think this is enough to heal and detox my liver?

    • ANSWER:
Your liver was probably detoxed about a week after you stopped drinking. Nothing is in it lying there damaging it in any way. The liver processed all that alcohol as it came through and it certainly needs no detoxing now. Do you realize that when a person gets a liver transplant from another living person that both people will grow back their missing portions of liver in about a month to become a full liver again? That's how quick and fast healing occurs in the liver. It regenerates all the time and the only thing that stops that would be some kind of permanent damage like cirrhosis of the liver that creates scar tissue which replaces healthy tissue in the liver. It takes many many years, even decades of drinking to cause any permanent damage. Your liver healed long ago and 6 months of drinking is really nothing to the liver. The most it probably did during that time was most likely just irritated and maybe caused some inflammation. That would heal in no time once you stopped drinking.

  31. QUESTION:
How can I detox my body after recently quitting smoking?
I just quit smoking a couple of days ago and want to detox my body to feel better. Any suggestion?

    • ANSWER:
Wow....wtg! I know how hard that is as I did the same thing over 5 years ago but hey...this is about you! Stay with it and remember, you don't have to stop.....just stop starting!

You body is going to go through some serious detoxing all on it's own so don't rush it but things you can do on your own are:

      -drink lots of lemon water
      -take vitamin C
-start a good multivitamin (not that drug store crap)
      -exercise
-sweat....be it a hot tub, sauna, anything that makes you sweat

Those things alone are a great start. From there as you progress you can add many other great natural products that will help you to detox but be very careful not to rush it as you can actually create a detox crisis.....meaning, your body is trying to get rid of toxins faster than it's capable of and it can cause incredible stress on your liver, kidneys and lymphatic system so easy does it!

  32. QUESTION:
What are the instructions for the Detox Bath?
I recently purchased the e-book The Detox Bath form the web page Pure Inside Out to see if it could help me with some health issues. Unfortunately, my computer crashed and some of my files were lost including this book. This happened before I could get around to read it and although I am dying to try this method, I am reluctant to pay the 30 dls for the e-book twice. So if anyone has read it or has the instructions for the Bath, I would greatly appreciate you helping me out.

    • ANSWER:
It's shame you paid for it once, given it's a scam.

      From Wiki:
"Certain approaches in alternative medicine claim to remove toxins from the body through herbal, electrical or electromagnetic treatments (such as the Aqua Detox treatment). These toxins are undefined and have no scientific basis, making the validity of such techniques questionable. There is no evidence for toxic accumulation in these cases, as the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials including metabolic wastes. Under this theory if toxins are too rapidly released without being safely eliminated (such as burning fat that stores toxins) they can damage the body and cause malaise. Therapies include contrast showers, detoxification foot pads, oil pulling, Gerson therapy, snake-stones, body cleansing, Scientology's Purification Rundown, water fasting, and metabolic therapy."
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification

I hope you find the instructions, but whatever you do, don't give the quacks another 30 bucks.

"It's an irrational concept, yet an intriguing idea, that modern life so fills us with poisons from polluted air and food additives that we need to be periodically "cleaned out" ("detoxified"). Never mind that natural chemicals in our foods are thousands of times more potent than additives, or that most Americans are healthier, live longer, and can choose from the most healthful food supply ever available. -- Frances M. Berg, M.S.

Real detoxification of foreign substances takes place in the liver, which modifies their chemical structure so they can be excreted by the kidneys which filter them from the blood into the urine. --Stephen Barrett, M.D.

"Toxin" is classic pseudoscience terminology. --Ben Goldacre, M.D.

"...these detox programs amount to a large quantity of excrement, both literally and figuratively.” --Peter Pressman, M.D.

  33. QUESTION:
Is there such thing is a Tomato Soup Detox diet?
My cousin who is a personal trainer suggested that i do this "Detox Diet" prior to starting workout sessions with him. He says that i need to eat Tomato Soup for four days, so that my body will be cleansed and i will lose some weight prior to working out with him. How valid is this? Does anyone have any opinions?

    • ANSWER:
Detox diets are basically bogus. Your body has its own detox system, liver and kidneys. If you stop putting junk into your system the body will cleanse itself. The best thing about this one is that you aren't required to buy some miracle product at 1000% markup, and it isn't going to harm you.

Of course you'll lose weight if you eat nothing but tomato soup for 4 days.
Not many calories and lots of water.

And find out what qualifies your cousin as a "personal trainer". Is he certified by the state? Has he completed accredited courses?

  34. QUESTION:
What is a good natural, supplement free detox for the kidneys and liver?
I want to avoid taking any supplements as i have a heap of allergies so i was thinking lots of water and vege juices etc. any ideas?
Alternatively, how important and beneficial are the common detox supplements ie. milk thistle etc. for this sort of thing.

    • ANSWER:
I like the old fashion mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey, lemon, cayenne, and water. mix a gallon in these parts and drink every day for 1 week.

      3/4 gal. water
      3 tbsp. Honey
      dash of cayenne
fill the rest of the gallon with the apple cider vinegar

It is good for detox and boosts metabolism. I would recommend a mostly vegan diet during this time. Use a lot of nuts or natural nut butter for protein. Grains in the morning, peanut butter at lunch, salads for dinner. Fruit and vegetables for snacks. I do this twice per year for detox and also recommend it to my patients. I also use supplements but it is not necessary. If you want more info on a regular healthy diet and exercise program I will send you my e-book for free. just let me know. Good luck.

  35. QUESTION:
What's a natural good way to detox your body?
I'm starting a new work out system next week and want to detox but without the outrageous expensive pills that usually make you sick to your stomach.
lol Erica hmmmmmm not from alcohol. I'm talking about just detoxing your body to purify your body.

    • ANSWER:
If you are open to alternative health methods, I have had success with a 1) vegetable juice fast (inexpensive), a 2) liver detox (fairly inexpensive, some supplements involved), and 3) detox pads (on the more expensive side).

      1) If you have access to a juicer, celery is great to juice for detox. I've used the following combination to great effect (celery, garlic clove, lemon, cayenne pepper, salt to taste). In my experience, 2-4 weeks max without solids without becoming extremely depleted.

      2) Dr Hulda Clark's (controversial figure due to some pretty aggressive claims) liver cleanse. Although I think some of her materials are hard to believe, I've had great results with her liver detox (she publishes it for free on her site). There are some supplements involved, but fairly inexpensive, and you don't have to buy them from her. The cool thing is, at the end you will pass stones from your liver, and feel amazing for about a week.

      3) Detox foot pads - there is quite a bit of skepticism on whether these work. You wear them on your feet and toxins come out onto the pads.. I'm not sure if it's not just the herbs changing colors (they claim to test them), but they are doing something, as I sleep great with them.

Several years ago I did a hair analysis test, then did the combination above for 2 months, and a second hair analysis that showed a significant decreases in toxic levels (especially aluminum, mercury, & pcb's).

  36. QUESTION:
How to detox body before starting a diet?
Ive decided on saturday i am going to detox my body before starting loosing weight. I want to do this so my body can be fresh and get rid of all the bad stuff i have been eating recently. Obviously you need to drink alot of water but what else helps you to cleanse yourself from the inside? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I, for one, believe wholeheartedly in detox. But, only in the proper way otherwise it may make matters worse. Many folks assume that the body is quite capable of ridding itself of the plethora of "junk" it comes in contact with and come out smelling like roses - that's just plain ludicrous. Yes, the Supreme Being did create a wondrous marvel, our body, as we are designed with organs and systems (colon, liver, kidneys, bladder, lymph and skin) that work around the clock to rid the body of "toxins" (cellular waste, digestive waste, foreign proteins, heavy metals, etc.) that occur due to what we eat, drink, breathe, put on our skin and even from the stresses of our daily lives. Problems will and do arise when our organs/systems are overloaded with work, impeding proper function and elimination. Essentially, If our bodies could handle all of this, there would be no sickness and disease, point blank!

When we feel below par or have symptoms of dis-ease, we are experiencing the effects of the build-up of toxins. This is another name for "acidosis" of the body. And, this is what needs to be addressed and reversed through a proper detox. Most people get it wrong when they think to "purge" the body of toxins with the many detox diets, programs or pills out in the marketplace that may do more harm than good. What needs to be done and is the real meaning of detox - Alkalize! This is the golden key that opens the door to health and vitality.

Here's what happens: Acidosis causes obstructions in either one or more of the 3 energy flows of the body - blood, nerve and lymph. Looking at the lymphatic system (which is the main system that is stressed), lymph fluid should be free flowing towards the kidneys that should filter out the acids. With the accumulation of too many acids (acidosis), the lymph fluid becomes cationic - an environment where things start to get sticky and coagulate, allowing very little to be eliminated. Any good detox regimen should aid in removing the obstructions by changing the body fluids to alkaline. This is a major start down the road to repair and rebuilding of the body.

Most detox diets/programs can be unhealthy and don't work only because they are not alkalizing. In many cases, they are designed to purge the body of so-called toxins. When purging is involved, what is happening is your body is being forced to function the way it should be functioning on its own. So, the solution to this inability to rid of something foreign in the body (obstructions) is to strengthen the cells so that they may perform this task of elimination optimally. Now, there are instances that a very "constipated" organ/system needs a little nudge and this nudge should be gotten through a natural means and for a short length of time, such as with the use of herbs - an alkalizing means…. not with chemicals that are acid-forming, making matters worse.

Drinking tons of water to "flush" is not an advisable approach to detox. This is because, if you're acidic, your body will retain water as it tries to "put out the fire" of acidosis and bloating is experienced in most cases (and especially since most of the water people drink is acidic!) This approach holds no water (pun intended) since when you release your bladder, it is usually clear after drinking lots of water. The fact is, if your kidneys are filtering the lymph optimally, you would have cloudy and flakey pee.

In essence, your diet should be your detox! A detox diet should include 80% (total calories) raw fruits or freshly-made fruit juices, 10 - 15% greens and 5 - 10% essential fatty acids. Meat, dairy products and even grain products hinder the natural detoxifying processes and should be totally avoided. They are acid-forming or congesting in the body. If your body is very acidic (sick and diseased) adding tissue-specific herbs or herbal formulas are a great plus. Even animals in the wild know which herbs to consume when they feel below par! By following this way of healthy eating, your body's elimination systems will be able to function optimally! Detoxing any other way sets you up for failure since it's most likely not an alkalizing protocol.

  37. QUESTION:
Where to get detox pills? How long does it take to get drugs out of system?
    I DO NOT DO DRUGS.

Just trying to help someone that does.
So, please tell me where to get detox pills in Arkansas, how much they cost, and how long it should take to get the drugs out of their system..

    PLEASE HELP.

    • ANSWER:
Don't bother. The only thing 'detox pills' do is take money out of your pocket NOT drugs out of someones system. There are only three things that will accomplish this task and they all have to work together. Liver, kidneys and time. Save your money.

there are some teas you can drink to help heal or regenerate the liver.
chamomile, dandilion and horsetail are three different types of teas you should consider drinking.
and avoid alcohol and soda until you heal the liver. Fried foods and too much meat can also put strain on the liver. The liver can heal itself as long as you allow it to. all vegetables are good, can't think of any specific veggie that is best. Look for a detox book to read up on ways to heal your liver. My favorite is "The seasonal detox diet" by Carrie L'Esperance. Good luck

  39. QUESTION:
What raw fruits and veggies should I eat while doing a 3 day detox?
Im familiar with how a 3 day detox works but, I'm not sure of what fruits and veggies I should eat for those 3 days.

    Any help?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
For a week or so before your three day detox diet, prepare your body for the diet by eliminating alcohol and caffeine from your diet. Limit or eliminate your intake of "junk food," sugar, and red meat. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Drink at least ten glasses of water each day.

During the 3 day detox diet, drink nothing but filtered water. If you like, you can add a little fresh-squeezed organic lemon juice to the water. This will help flush the toxins out of your system. Eat light meals of steamed vegetables, fresh organic fruit, and a little brown rice.

Do some moderate exercise during your detox diet. It will improve your circulation, helping the toxins to leave your body, and sweating will help flush toxins from your body. Make sure to drink plenty of water so you stay well hydrated, though.

Following the three day detox diet, don't rush out to McDonald's. Eat lightly for the next several days. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Soups are good. Continue to drink at least ten glasses of water each day.

You can use an herbal supplement along with the 3 day detox diet to increase its effectiveness. Dandelion is a good herb to use, because it has a diuretic effect, meaning it helps flush toxins from your system, and it also supports liver functioning.

  40. QUESTION:
What detox products can I find at the Supermarket?
I need to lose some weight before I go back to college again. I'm eating healthier and going to the gym at least 2 hrs. But I want to lose weight a bit faster by detoxing. What products are good to detox? Is it green tea good? Or do you know any other products that sell in the supermarket? Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,

Many people detox to lose weight (hence the many varieties of starvation detox diets) or use it in order to continue with unhealthy and over-indulgent lifestyles! The dangers come in when people chose unsafe detox methods without considering the harmful side-effects, such as colonic irrigation, or liquid-diets that rob the body of essential nutrients.

It is therefore important to explore detox options and choose one that gently assists the body, without causing any harm during the process. It is also not advisable to use detoxing as a quick fix weight-loss plan as this promotes “yo-yo” dieting that has been linked with weight-gain.

There are many herbal ingredients that may aid in a natural detoxification of the body. Dandelion and Fennel are just two herbs that have been used throughout history to cleanse and aid body detoxification, rejuvenate liver functioning, and kick-start the body back to life! Pelargonium reniforme is another ingredient that also works on promoting optimal liver functioning and supporting the body's natural ability to break down and eliminate fat for a natural detoxification.

One such natural remedy is http://www.healthherbsandnutrition.com/products/detoxdrops.htm which has gained considerable popularity due to its zero side effects, support realistic and healthy weight management programs, and its supportive function in maintaining liver health and well-being.

Check it out and see if it helps. It seems, it generally does.

      Good Luck!

  41. QUESTION:
What is the best way to detox and get started living healthy?
I need to lose weight and I know eating healthy will do that for me because I lose weight every time I eat well. Thing is I have been so busy that my eating habits have been bad and I need to detox from fast food, junk food and salt.

    • ANSWER:
detox by eating protein, fish, chicken, vegetables, water, and exercise. avoid "detox" products. they are expensive laxatives only. and your kidneys and liver are the detoxifying organs in your body. eating/sleep/exericise and the wt will come off. you can be malnourished from junk food, processed foods, which is all up and down the grocery store aisles. the real food is on the perimeters of the store if you notice. The shelved foods will stay there forever, there are so many preservatives in them. can't believe they bother to put an expiration date on them or eat by date. as this junk will rarely go bad.

  42. QUESTION:
What are the functions of organelles in liver cells?
Can you give me the functions of these organelles in a liver cell? Like tell me what they do for the liver cell.
    • Nucleus
    • DNA
    • RNA
    • Cytoplasm
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Quite a question. Here is a brief overview of each.

Nucleus - contains DNA and directs protein synthesis, acting as a control center for the cell

Nucleolus - resides within the nucleus and produces the building blocks of ribosomes

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum - synthesizes lipids such as steroids, fatty acids and phospholipids, especially present in liver cells as they serve to aid detox. Also stores calcium ions

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum - synthesizes proteins from the polypeptides secreted by ribosomes and also produces more membrane

Golgi Apparatus - functions as a shipping center, finishing, sorting, and shipping many products from the cell

Lysosomes - assist in breaking down and digesting many nutrients, as well as recycling matter within the cell

Vacuoles - fulfill many maintenance roles within the cell, assisting plant growth by absorbing water, or much differently, contractile vacuoles function in some fresh water protists to expel water to prevent dillution

Chloroplasts - not present in animal cells, play a vital role in photosynthesis, converting light to chemical energy

Mitochondria - the energy powerhouse of a cell, produces energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) from the breakdown of glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water

Some other important aspects are cell membranes which control traffic into and out of a cell, cell walls which serve in the structure of plant cells, flagella which enable some cells, such as sperm, to travel, cilia assist some protist movement and move fluid across the surface of tissue in many animal cells, and some others that I am likely omitting at the moment.

      Hope this was helpful. :)

  43. QUESTION:
What is a good Detox diet for an ectomorph body type?
I am 20 years old and have been having digestion problems and a few health problem. Yes, I have seen a doctor about it and everything seems to have rational and easily fixed by medication. It was suggested to me that I do a detox diet just to try to clear out some of the bad stuff in my system. But its hard trying to find a diet I can actually do.

I am about 5'1" and 105lbs. I have a naturally high metabolism and physically need protein though out the day and sustenance or I become ill, light headed, nauseous and irritable. I want to find a detox diet that won't require me to just drink a veggie/fruit juice. My body can't handle just those in a day.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
If you had a high metabolism, you would have a host of symptoms and be under the care of an endocrinologist. If you're lean, it's your genetics...minimal adipocytes.

If your doctor suggested the detox diet, you need a new doctor. You have some bad information for a 20 year old. You should get some books at the library and study. Don't try to learn from the internet.

Currently "detox" is a faddist word, relatively meaningless, and is used to express that which the users cannot otherwise express because of ignorance or because the expression would be patently false.

  46. QUESTION:
How to Detox and cleans your body?
What is the proper prosee to detox and cleans your body what products to use . After how do you keep your body cleanesed and what are the best things to eat and drink to keep your body healthy colen and all? What are things you can do to heal the damage you may have put on your body? Thanks for your time and help.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Lisa,

Detoxification should ideally begin in the mind. The first step towards full body todex should be your decision to start fresh and with a clean slate.

Generic diets for detoxification are good, but may not stimulate the liver, lungs or the kidneys as much as one would like. Over time, by introducing supplements, herbs and other substances (which are usually organ specific) that will amplify your body's ability to process out the excessive level of toxins, a full body detox can restore systemic balance. Of course, herbs are foods too and provide one with vitamins, minerals and enzymes for excellent nutrition. Herbs are powerful, because they may be combined together to fortify those herbs that aid specific organs.

For people suffering from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or chemical dependency, detox can play a major role in helping you bring yourself back to a natural state of balance and harmony.

  47. QUESTION:
How long does a person have to live with liver failure?
My father in law has been a alcoholic his whole life. My husband, and his father are not on speaking terms. He got a phone call that his father is passing out, throwing up blood, not remembering peoples names, forgetting where he is at. I do know he is still drinking. I don't know anything about liver failure, or exactly what his doctor has said. I just don't want my husband to regret anything. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If your father in law is throwing up blood, this is definitely an medical emergency...he could bleed out or bleed internally.

      I will explain:
There are many causes of liver cell damage...one is alcohol. When the cells of the liver become damaged, the immune system of the body responds to this and causes inflammation to develop inside
the liver...this will cause the liver to enlarge
in size. If the alcohol is not stopped and the inflammation is not treated, the liver cells may die off and form scar tissue
inside the liver that will block the flow of blood through the liver on its way back to the heart and also block the flow of blood to the other liver cells and they die off also,
It is an irreversible, progressive disease known as Cirrhosis of the liver.

Because the blood isn't able to flow through the liver well anymore, it backs up into the vein under the liver, and that goes into the liver, known as the portal vein. This causes
what is known as Portal Hypertension. It also backs up into smaller vessels not used to handling this amount of blood
(known as varies)and pressure and they develop weak spots and can break open just like a balloon bursting. They are
usually found in the esophagus and in the rectal area. The spleen may also
enlarge in size because of this.
Any bleeding from these two places is considered an emergency. People who have cirrhosis, their livers cannot make clotting factors to help the blood to clot
and therefore they bleed and bruise very easily.
Your father in law needs attention immediately.

Now I will tell you other things that may take place.
He should have an advance directive or power of attorney form made up so that someone in the family can handle
all his medical and financial problems that come up. http://www.caringinfo.org/stateaddownload
People with Cirrhosis develop a condition known as Encephalopathy. This happens because the liver isn't able to change the ammonia, that comes from the protein
use in their bodies, to urea. It stays ammonia and can go pass the blood brain barrier, with the blood, into the brain. It causes confusion, disorientations, tremors,
sleep pattern changes and a number of other symptoms...and if not treated, can lead to a coma. The doctor usually
places the patient on medication called Lactolose; but there are other medications
      also.

He may have an alcoholic "beer belly", but this might be Ascites. The build up of fluid in the abdominal area. This is because the liver can no longer efficiently make a protein that holds fluid in our vessels. This fluid leaks out and collects here. It can become so much that the patient has trouble breathing and eatting. This fluid
can be drained by a procedure known as Paracentesis and give the patient some relief.

You father in law should be seeing either a
gastroenterologist or hepatologist now. He definitely needs any help and support he can get. Alcoholics can be combative and fight with you...it is the alcohol that is doing this, however, considering this might be the encephalopathy that is very similar to being
      drunk...it may be this.

I hope your father in law gets the help he needs; that the differences can be worked out between your husband and his dad. It is good that you care...when it comes to disease, especially one that is as horrible as this one...it should draw families closer
      together not apart.
The doctor may suggest a detox
program at the hospital for him and if he can stay detoxed from alcohol for a period of six months...he may be able to be placed on the transplant list.
      Many recovering alcoholics are waiting
      on the transplant list now.

I hope this information is of some help to you.

No one but the doctors who have his
tests results and know his passed and
      present medical history...can give you
an educated guess of how far advanced
he is in the disease and how long he
      may have to live.
The best test done to confirm this is
      a liver biopsy.

      Best wishes

  48. QUESTION:
What is a healthy and manageable way to detox?
I recently decided to make a lifestyle change and instead of eating whatever I want I'm sticking to lean proteins or low fat dairy, a few servings of whole grains (high in fiber), some fruits, and lots of vegetables. I used to smoke pot everyday and cigarettes here and there so I feel like DETOXING wouldn't hurt.

Does anyone know simple tricks to a painless detox? I've read things online like "ONLY EAT TOMATOES" but that is not practical for me! Thank you!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Detoxification should ideally begin in the mind. The first step towards full body todex should be your decision to start fresh and with a clean slate.

Generic diets for detoxification are good, but may not stimulate the liver, lungs or the kidneys as much as one would like. Over time, by introducing supplements, herbs and other substances (which are usually organ specific) that will amplify your body's ability to process out the excessive level of toxins, a full body detox can restore systemic balance. Pelargonium reniforme is another ingredient that also works on promoting optimal liver functioning and supporting the body's natural ability to break down and eliminate fat for a natural detoxification.

While herbs may be taken at any time, they are best for detoxification purposes when they are used with a good diet also. It does not make any sense to take herbs to cleanse the liver if the bowels are clogged with junk or refined foods, since the liver dumps its toxins into the bowels. And while detoxification diets are effective by themselves, they may be reinforced and speeded up with herbs, which stimulate the eliminative organs.

Detoxification diets help the body to eliminate toxins in many ways. First, natural vegetarian diets include the fiber needed for stimulating good bowel eliminate. They also contain the proper amounts of vitamins that feed and nourish the bowels and the liver, as well as other eliminative organs. They also include a valuable source of enzymes since most vegetarian diets are eaten raw. The elimination of meat from the diet for a short period enhances detoxification because meat is so difficult to digest and requires many enzymes for its digestion. Therefore, vegetarian diets are cleansing diets and aid the body in elimination of toxins.

  49. QUESTION:
How does your liver affect acne?
I've heard that your liver is responsible for clearing out any toxins in your blood, and if your blood gets overloaded with toxins it can overwhelm your liver causing outbreaks. Can anyone shed some light on this topic on if thats true or how to cleanse your liver?

    • ANSWER:
I've heard similar things, and because of that some doctors will recommend liver cleanses, or similar cleanses (detoxes) to help clear up acne. Basically, at the heart of it, what's going on inside your body surely has an effect on what comes out your body. When toxins need to be released they come out in a number of ways. One way is via your natural elimination system, another can be through sweat, and another (but not the only other way), is through your skin.

Here is a link for some different liver cleanses that you can do from home:

      http://www.curezone.com/cleanse/liver/default.asp

Curezone in general, has a lot of good cleansing ideas, so if you go to the homepage, just go through some of the forums and ask questions there. They're really on top of things, so they'll post back pretty quickly.

      Good luck!

  50. QUESTION:
What are NATURAL ways to detox my body at home?
Anything you guys know about that I can make at home?
I don't want to buy any fancy stuff. Something simple, with stuff I already have at home.
I tried drinking water right after I wake up, but it's kinda hard.
    Im 16 , 185 lbs, 5ft 11".
Im starting swimming soon, so I want to go with a detox formula to flush away my toxins and fat.
    I have chronic constipation also.

    • ANSWER:
Look, you are not a walking bag of toxins and you do not need to drink or eat anything unusual to detoxify yourself. You already own the world's most efficient onboard filters for the purpose- you call them your liver and kidneys. Your body already removes waste, in urine and feces, on a regular basis. Nothing you can eat is going to leach things out of your body, at least not things like heavy metals. It just doesn't work that way. If you want to keep your body in tip top form for swimming, the best thing you could do is simply eat a well balanced diet, heavy on the whole grains, fruits and veggies, and light on refined foods, fast foods, red meat, and fats. Drinking water is fine, and you can do that whenever you drink liquid. It doesn't even have to be straight water either. Your body routinely gets the fluid it needs from all the food you eat, even if it's not drunk. Melons are primarily water and fiber, as are many fruits and veggies. You also will want to up the calcium intake, so you have material to build bone and muscle with. The best sources of that are still dairy products, but you just don't need all the fat. So stick with low to no fat dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Avoid the empty calories in junk foods and sodas. Do not try mixing up concoctions of strange things to eat or drink. They simply don't work, and your body won't appreciate the effort to help out. All you have to do is eat right, and trust your body knows what to do with the rest. That's the most natural way going.
